Noreiga, Gomes inducted into East Zone ‘Hall of Fame’
November 17th 2008

Former T&T and West Indies off-spinner the late Jack Noreiga was inducted into the East Zonal Council of the T&T Cricket Board Hall of Fame at the zone’s annual awards and presentation ceremony held last Sunday at the El Dorado Secondary School.

Joining Noreiga in the ‘Hall of Fame’ was another former T&T and West Indies player Larry Gomes.

The left-handed Gomes is the current manager of the T&T Under-19 team and was recently elevated to the position of chairman of the T&T senior selection panel.

CEO and General Secretary of the T&TCB, Forbes Persaud, praised the executive of the East Zone for their vision in inducting Noreiga and Gomes into the ‘Hall of Fame’.

“ The late Noreiga and Gomes have served the eastern community and by extension, the country, the region snd the international arena with distinction. And it is a fitting gesture to honour them into the ‘Hall of Fame’,” Persaud said.

President of the TTCB, Mr. Deryck Murray gave the feature address and complemented the performances and contributions of players and officials from the zone. He emphasized the need for improvement in the quality of facilities and players at all levels and not only at the top.

Murray stressed that Test cricket would remain the true standard by which players would be judged and alluded to the quality test players performing even in other forms of the game. Test cricket has stood the test of time even with the advent of many modifications to the game in last 40 years.

Memories of past players from this zone such as Sir Learie Constantine, Ellis 'Puss' Achong, Jaswick Taylor, Harold Joseph, Gomes and others have given a rich tradition of contribution to national cricket, Murray said he can see trend continuing.

On hand to help present the awards were also the 1st Vice President, Azim Bassarath, General Secretary, Forbes Persaud, Treasurer, Richard Williams and Executives of other Zonal councils. The HCL Trincity League was praised for keeping cricket alive in the zone over the last 15 years. Sponsors such as Toyota Trinidad Ltd, Bartholomew's Transport, Ricking Ltd, Vemco Ltd, Regal Products and others were thanked for all their support during the inaugural season.

Arik Ishraf was named ‘Cricketer of the Year’.
