Siloch, Barath capture top awards at Clarke Road
November 17th 2008

T&T’s Twenty20 allrounder Sean Siloch was named ‘Cricketer of the Year’ at the annual prize giving ceremony of the FCB Clarke Road United Sports Club.

The function was held on Friday night at Wilson Road in Penal. Siloch had to starve off the challenge from T&T’s middle-order batsman Gregory Mahabir, Windward Islands allrounder Kenroy Peters, former National off-spinner Mukesh Persad and former T&T Under-19 left-arm spinner Dane Teelucksingh.

Siloch scored 337 runs in the Sunday League Limited Overs competition including a highest score of 118 not out against Yorkshire. He also tallied 286 runs in his team’s tour of New York.

Veteran spinner Persad and left-arm pacer Peters each bagged 30 wickets apiece in the National League tournament.

T&T and West Indies youth opening batsman Adrian Barath captured the prestigious ‘Youth Cricketer of the Year’ award.

Chief Executive Officer of First Citizens, Larry Howai praised the organisation for the high standards it has set and maintained over the ten year partnership period. He reminded the audience of First Citizens involvement in the sponsorship of sporting events and sporting organisations such as the First Citizens Sports Foundation and said he looked forward to the day when a Clarke Road United member can be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.

Feature Speaker, Rev. Gary Siewdass, former T&T Under/19 player, who also represented First Citizens Clarke Road United in the 1980's, delivered a very relevant address, touching on four basic tenets to which sportsmen and women should adhere, in order to set the stage for success. He enumerated them as Fitness, Nutrition, Discipline and Peace.

He touched on the changing landscape of world cricket, especially as it relates to Twenty-20, and noted that technique, as we knew it, may no longer be as relevant in the merging game, but fitness, discipline and the ability to keep calm in the more fronetic forms of the sport should serve cricketers in good stead.

Among the invited guests who attended the gala function were Mrs Larry Howai, Alloy Lequay, Ellis Lewis, Mr & Mrs Anand Daniel, Councillor Rampersad Hardial, Patrick Rampersad, Carlton Baboolal (Heritage Radio), Josh Peters (Heritage Radio).
