Young Aussies open tour against PowerGen Sports
November 21st 2008

IMPRESSIVE T&T Under-19 left-handed opening batsman Evin Lewis will lead a powerful PowerGen Sports Club youth team against the touring Australia Under-16 on Sunday at Syne Village in Penal. See results here

Lewis caught the eyes of all and sundry during this year’s TCL Group West Indies Youth Challenge in Barbados.

Also included in the PowerGen squad are two National Under-17 players, wicketkeeper Rixon Maniram and left-arm bowler Daron Beekha. Maniram was a key member of the T&T Under-19 team which defeated Barbados in the West Indies Youth Challenge limited overs final at Banks Brewery.

It will be the first time since 1965 that an Australian Schoolboys cricket team will be touring the Caribbean.

The young Aussies arrived in Trinidad on Thursday and will play matches in Trinidad, Tobago and Barbados.

They had a briefing session will local officials on Friday at the Cascadia Hotel in St Anns.

The first time that an Australian youth team toured the Caribbean was in 1965, included in that side was allrounder Gary Gilmour, one of three players from that squad who went on to play Test cricket.

According to local co-ordinator, Anthony Harford of All Sports Promotion, the Australians have embarked on this development project, because they missed playing in the recent Clico Under-15 World Cup and chose to travel to the Caribbean since the regional team won that championship.

The Australians will play five matches in Trinidad and Tobago and then travel to Barbados on December 3, for two games against Barbados and Windward Islands Under-17 teams respectively.

Match starts at 9.30 am and will be over 50 overs per-side.
