his youth career in glory And Barath is quietly confident of leading his country to victory in the series. The 18-year-old right-handed batsman was named to lead the U-19s in the three-day league and one-day limited overs tournament which bowls off with three matches across the island of Barbados on Friday. T&T
will play Jamaica in the opening round of the series at Banks. Barath scored 618 runs in the Carib Beer Regional Cricket Series since making his debut last year against Guyana. To date, he has scored two hundreds and three fifties with a highest score of 131 against the Leewards and has a healthy average of 44.14. “This being my second stint as U-19 captain and I will want to give it my best shot again . I have had previous experience in regional tournaments. I was captain of the T&T U-13 team, vice-captain of the national U-15 team and in 2006 I was vice-captain of the U-19 team which took part in the series in Guyana,” Barath said. In the TCL Group Youth Challenge, Barath has scored 708 runs with a highest score of 93 against Guyana last year at Warner Park in St Kitts. “This year has to be special for me since it is my last year in the U19 series, and I want to end this phase of my career with some hundreds and to lead T&T to both titles in this year’s championship. “The team is well balanced and is closely knitted and if we play to our true ability, we can come out on top,” a confident Barath stated. Two players from last year’s series have been retained - Barath and vice-captain and allrounder Kjorn Ottley Among the newcomers batsman Evin Lewis, Tobagonian allrounder Ako George and right-arm medium bowler Sheldon Dogan. The team will be coached by former T&T and West Indies left-handed batsman Larry Gomes and managed by executive member of the T&T Cricket Board, William Wallace. The

emerge says Wallace These were the words of newly-appointed manager of the T&T Under-19 team, William Wallace, speaking ahead of their departure today (Wednesday) to take part in the TCL Group Regional Youth Cricket Challenge in Barbados. T&T will open their quest for top honours against Jamaica on Friday at Banks in Bridgetown. Among
the newcomers are talented batsman Evin Lewis, Tobagonian allrounder Ako
George and right-arm medium bowler Sheldon Dogan. Lewis has been in splendid form this season scoring over six hundred runs for Princes Town Senior Comprehensive School in the PowerGen Secondary Schools League, which earned him the prestigious ‘Cricketer of the Year’ title, on Friday night at the Learning Resource Centre in McBean, Couva. The left-handed batsman also notched 411 runs for Rio Sports in the South-East Zonal Council of the T&T Cricket Board. George has also impressed with the bat during the warm-up matches scoring consistently, while Dogan was the leading wickettaker in the BG TT Under-19 competition with 22 wickets and also bagged 27 wickets for St Mary’s Superstars in the South-East Zonal tournaments. Also expected to gave a good showing is left-arm spinner Javed Boodram and allrounder Kareem Jumadeen, son of former T&T and West Indies left-arm spinner Raphick Jumadeen. Led by West Indies youth opening batsman Barath, T&T completed a five-day live-in-camp last Thursday at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Development Centre at Balmain, Couva. Wallace
was quite impressed with what went on in the training camp. Barath who is in his fourth year in the TCL Group Youth Series said that the camp was quite successful with many positives coming out of it. “ We had some good mental development sessions, also the physical and net exercises was conducted in a most professional manner, with several former top T&T and West Indies players being a part of it,” Barath said. Among the facilitators were National and Resident Coach of the T&T Cricket Board, Kelvin Williams, Physiotherapist, Ronald Rogers and U19 coach, Larry Gomes. A former T&T and West Indies middle-order, Gomes has been assigned to do the coaching job once more.
