Combined Campuses and Colleges vs Trinidad & Tobago
February 9th 2009

Day 3 CCC v T&T

Combined Campuses and Colleges gave a gritty bowling performance but in the end surrendered first innings points to Trinidad and Tobago, in a rain-ruined third day’s play in a fifth round fixture of the West Indies Cricket Board Four-Day competition, at UWI grounds here on Sunday.

T&T led by a face saving knock of 90 by Sherwin Ganga scrambled to first innings to help his team to stay alive in the contest.

Ganga (S) with support from West Indies out-of-favour off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth featured in a defiant ninth wicket partnership of 63 off 125 balls to snatch first innings points from the competitive youngsters. Chasing the CCC’s challenging first innings total of 315, T&T cricketers were dismissed for 362 in the final session after rain completely washed out the post lunch period.

In arrears by 47 runs, CCC reached 43 for two, batting a second time, still four runs behind the deficit. Opener Omar Phillip (0) was dismissed with the first ball of the innings, caught by Kieron Pollard at first slip off Atiba Alert’s bowling, while nearing the close, the talented Nicolai Parris (10) was caught at forward short-leg by Justin Guillen of Samuel Badree’s bowling with the total on 40.

Skipper Simon Jackson is not out on 29 and night-watchman Ryan Austin one.

Ganga (S) was the ninth batsman to be dismissed with the score at 332, caught at the wicket by Chadwick Walton off Kirt Wilkinson’s bowling. He batted for 286 minutes, faced 199 balls and clobbered eight well struck boundaries.

The soft spoken Ganga (S) received a sustained round of applause on his return to the pavilion.

Jaggernauth was left stranded on 37 not out, after Alert was the last to be dismissed for 17, caught by Parris off Wilkinson’s bowling.

Austin was the leading bowler for CCC with figures of six for 123 from 50 overs.

He received good support from Wilkinson and Kavesh Kantasingh who ended with two for 26 and two for 88 respectively.

Former champions, T&T, fifth in the seven-team standings on 21 points, and needing an outright win to stay alive in the tournament, were made to fight all the way by a determined CCC outfit in the contest in which they expected to come away with maximum points.

In pursuit of the opposition’s total, T&T’s cricketers were jolted by the probing off-spin from Austin, who was well supported by former West Indies youth left-arm spinner Kantasingh.

However, Ganga (S), younger brother of skipper Daren Ganga, along with Jaggernauth came together with their rescue act to salvage some hope for the T&T team.

Earlier, T&T resumed on their overnight position of 210 for five, still needing a further 106 runs for first innings lead. Allrounder Ganga was on 28, and Gibran Mohammed eight.

But with the addition of only one run, Mohammed was caught at first slip by Floyd Reifer without adding to his overnight total of eight.

Burly allrounder Richard Kelly joined Ganga (S) and the pair revived a fight-back with intelligent batting and sensible running.

They took the score to 255 before Kelly (24) was caught by close-in fieldsmen Reifer from Austin’s bowling.

Badree (5) playing his first Four-day game for T&T this season, never looked like staying , eventually giving Jackson a simple catch off Austin’s bowling as T&T stumbled to 269 for eight.

In between, Ganga (S) reached his first First-Class fifty of the season with a single off Austin through the cover region. It came off 124 balls in 177 minutes and contained four fours.

Jaggernauth then partnered Ganga (S) safely to the lunch interval with T&T 282 for eight, with the former on five not out and the latter 64.

Persistent drizzles during the lunch break kept the players off the field for almost 145 minutes and play eventually got started 3.15 pm.

Play starts at 9.30 am.

Day 2 CCC V T&T

T&T cricketers and Combined Campuses and Colleges were involved in an intense struggle for first innings lead at the end of an intriguing second day’s play of the West Indies Cricket Board Four-Day Championship fifth round fixture at the Sir Frank Worrell Ground at the University of the West Indies in St Augustine.

In an extended day’s play yesterday, due to a stoppage for rain in the final session, T&T chasing the visitors competitive first innings total of 315 were in a spot of bother on 210 for five.

Left-handers Sherwin Ganga is not out on 28 and Gibran Mohammed unbeaten on eight.

Off-spinner Ryan Austin with three for 62 and left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh two for 61 are the wickettakers for the youthful CCC team. The local team still need a further 106 runs to overhaul the opposition’s total with five wickets intact.

Only a polished 78 by the in-form opening batsman Lendl Simmons and a composed 34 by skipper Daren Ganga looked the part when T&T batted. The remaining batsmen looked ordinary against the visitors inconsistent bowling attack.

Earlier, CCC resumed on their bedtime position of 269 for eight and went on to post a challenging 315 before they were dismissed 10 minutes inside the first hour of play.

The home team was frustrated by two stubborn partnerships for the ninth and tenth wicket.

Spinners Ryan Austin and Kavesh Kantasingh added 51 in 71 minutes for the ninth wicket before the former was trapped leg before wicket to pacer Atiba Alert for a well-played 26, while Jamel Noel put on a gritty 35 in 30 minutes for the last wicket, before Noel was caught at mid-on by Kieron Pollard from the bowling of Amit Jaggernauth for a well compiled 25, leaving hometown boy Kantasingh not out on 31.

Alert was the leading bowler for T&T with three for 77, while Richard Kelly (2-31), Samuel Badree (2-55) and Amit Jaggernauth (2-79) had two wickets apiece.

Left with about 60 minutes batting to the lunch interval, T&T went to the break on 41 without loss, with Simmons on 21 not out, and Adrian Barath 14.

On the resumption, T&T lost their first wicket with the score on 67, when Barath (20) was caught and bowled by Austin.

Captain Ganga joined Simmons and played responsibly against the CCC spin and pace attack employed by CCC’s skipper Simon Jackson.

In between, Simmons reached his half-century with a boundary to square-leg and celebrated his achievement with a massive six over the long-on boundary.

Simmons’ fifty came in 115 minutes off 103 balls and contained five fours and one six.

The duo continued to dominate the bowling until a lapse in concentration saw the demise of Simmons, stumped by Chadwick Walton off Kantasingh. He batted for 150 minutes faced 130 balls and struck six fours and two sixes.

T&T went to the tea interval on 140 for two and on the interruption saw the dismissal of Justin Guillen (15) caught at mid-on by Jamar Noel off Kantasingh and Ganga (D) (34) caught at mid-on by Nicolai Parris of Austin.

There was a stoppage of rain at 4.14 pm with T&T 188 for four, and with the first ball after the break, Kieron Pollard (14) was caught at the long-on boundary by Kantasingh.

Ganga (S) and Mohammed saw the team to the close without any more hassle.

Day 1 CCC v T&T

T&T cricketers were made to toil all day against the Combined Campuses and College in the all important fifth round fixture of the West Indies Cricket Board Four-Day championship at the Sir Frank Worrell Grounds at the University of the West Indies in St Augustine, yesterday.

Combined Campuses and Colleges led by half-centuries from Floyd Reifer and Nicolai Parris closed on a challenging 269 for eight, batting all of the 95 overs which were bowled in the day’s play.

Reifer struck a brilliant 82 in 173 minutes off 138 balls laced with eight fours and two sixes and Parris a workmanlike 58 off 147 balls in 172 minutes which included four fours and a six, but could not receive the support of the other batsmen as the opposition bowlers came out on top in the final session.

Ryan Austin with 26 and Kavesh Kantasingh 15 are the not out batsmen. Leading bowlers for Trinidad and Tobago were Richard Kelly (2-31), Samuel Badree (2-49) and Atiba Alert (2-55).

Earlier, T&T won the toss and inserted CCC. The home team left out batsman Imran Khan, pacer Navin Stewart and off-spinner Sunil Narine from their squad of 14, while Gilford Moore and Anderson Sealy failed to make the final eleven on the CCC team.

The youngsters opened the batting with Omar Phillip and skipper Simon Jackson and looked in good knick against the opening attack headed by pacers Kelly and Alert.

However, after Phillip and Jackson added 23 for the first wicket, complacency crept in and both were dismissed in the space of 10 runs. With the score on 23, Phillip (16) guided a delivery from Kelly straight into the hands of Amit Jaggernauth at second slip, and at 33, Jackson (6) nicked one off Alert into the safe gloves of wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed.

The talented Parris was joined by the experienced Romel Currency (8) and pushed the score along to 53 before the latter departed, brilliantly caught and bowled by part-time off-spinner Sherwin Ganga.

Player/coach of the CCC team, Reifer joined his Barbadian colleague and together they went to the lunch interval on 78 for three, with Parris on 22 and Reifer 17.

On the resumption, the duo carried the fight against the spin and pace attack employed by skipper Daren Ganga with resolute and determined batting.

A former West Indies Test batsman, Reifer was the more aggressive of the two, picking boundaries off Badree and Jaggernauth with consummate ease, while the dimunitive Parris was content to play the sheet anchor role taking the ones and twos and the occasional boundary.

In between, Parris brought up his fifty with an enormous six off Jaggernauth over the long-on boundary. Parris’ landmark was achieved off 124 deliveries in 142 minutes and was enriched with three fours and one six.

Soon after, Feifer also reached his half-century, with a risky two runs between the wicketkeeper and first slip off Ganga’s (S) bowling. It came in 96 minutes off 78 balls and included six fours and one six.

But after they added exactly 100 in 107 minutes and 183 balls for the fourth wicket, the exciting partnership came to an end, when Parris (58) was caught at gully by Justin Guillen off Alert with the total on 153.

Out-of-favour Barbados senior team batsman, Kurt Wilkinson joined Reifer and featured in an unbroken fifth wicketpartnership of 45 as they went to the tea break at 198 for four, with Reifer on 76 not out and Wilkinson 24.

After the interval, CCC lost three wickets with the total on 211 including the prize scalp of Reifer caught at the mid-wicket boundary by Guillen off Badree. Wilkinson (31) followed with the very next ball trapped in front. Kevin McClean survived the hattrick but with the score still at 211, CCC lost their seventh wicket, when wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton (0) was given out leg before to Kelly.

The T&T efforts however, were thwarted by stubborn resistance from an unbroken ninth wicket partnership 40 by Austin and hometown boy Kantasingh.
