ROUND-UP T&TCB cops 7th First Citizens award The T&T Cricket Board (T&TCB) reigned supreme among the National Sporting Organisations at the 2008 First Citizens Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards ceremony held at Queen’s Hall on March 25. The T&TCB copped the Jeffrey Stollmeyer Award for being the best organised sporting organisation for 2008. Last year, the T&TCB enjoyed tremendous success on the field of play with the national senior and youth teams emerging champions in several regional tournaments. At the senior level, T&T easily copped the Stanford Twenty20 title by whipping Jamaica in the final, and English County champion Middlesex in the Stanford Super Series. In the regional 50-over per side competition held in Guyana, T&T came out on top, defeating Barbados in the final, but had to settle for the runner-up spot in the four-day regional series behind arch rivals Jamaica. At the Under 19 level, T&T led by Adrian Barath, came out on top by winning the limited overs competition. The Under-17s retained the Sir Gary Sobers International Schools title playing unbeaten in that tournament in Barbados. The youngsters also won the first ever regional U-17 tournament, hosted and financed by the T&TCB. T&TCB implemented a series of development programmes during the year: the Guardian Life Under-10 Primary Schools Development Programme, the Easter Bunny Coaching Camps for players from five to 13 years old, the Star Programme for Form One students, the PowerGen Coaching Programme for the 13 to 15 age group, the High Performance Centres for Under- 17 players and the Cricket Academy for Under-23 cricketers. The T&TCB also sent several teams on developmental tours throughout the Caribbean, among them being the national primary schools boys and girls teams to Guyana and the Under-14 and Under- 16 teams to Antigua. The T&TCB also hosted the English Schools Cricket Association West Region Under-15 team for a series of matches against local youth teams. Chief Executive Officer and General Secretary of the T&TCB Forbes Persaud said that he and members of his board were delighted and ecstatic over the award. “We are indeed very ecstatic and delighted to be the recipient of this prestigious award. This is the second time in three years since our administration came into office that we have won this title and I am indeed very proud of our success,” Persaud stated.
