SCHOOLS CRICKET LEAGUE Battle for InterCol supremacy in the ‘Oil Belt’ Title-holding Presentation College, Chaguanas, and arch-rivals Princes Town West Secondary will meet on Friday, in the final of the PowerGen Secondary School Cricket League Limited Overs Competition under lights at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre. The teams will be battling for the coveted Daren Ganga InterCol trophy which will be at stake in the 30-over contest, which starts at 5 pm. The official launch of the final took place on Thursday at the Queen’s Park Oval and both team expressed confidence of lifting the silverware. Champions ‘Pres’ has won the title eight times in the last 12 years and was runner-up on four occasions. ‘Pres’ skipper and T&T’s opening batsman Adrian Barath said that his team is oozing with confidence and expects a good showing from his well-organised and disciplined unit. The pint-sized Barath said that if everything goes accoring to plan, the Daren Ganga InterCol trophy will return to Central Trinidad for another year. “It is an honour and privilege to be in another InterCol final. We have a good chance of retaining the trophy. I will like to see both teams go out there and play positive cricket and may the best side win,” said the soft-spoken Barath. Several promising players are included in the ‘Pres’ team, includind T&T and West Indies youth left-arm spinner Derone Davis, T&T Under-19 allrounder Yannick Ottley , Amir Khan and Qadir Shah. This is the ninth year ‘P Town’ will be appearing in the final. A tough customer against any team, ‘P Town’ has won the title four times and will be seeking another under the guidance of Elijah St Clair. Leading the charge for ‘P Town’ will be impressive T&T Under-19 opening batsman Evin Lewis, with support from Navin Kanhai, Amando Patterson and Nicos Rajkumar. Vice-captain Kanhai said that the team has a good and talented bunch of players and he expects a close and exciting contest. “We have a good and talented bunch of players. We are going all out to play hard and good cricket, and who knows the trophy could be heading to Princes Town once more,” Kanhai said. Preceeding the intercol final will be the 20/20 final between San Fernando Government Secondary and Vishnu Boys High School at 12 noon. Also speaking at the launch was William Wallace, head of the SSCL. An executive member of the T&T Cricket Board, Wallace said that the InterCol final is definitely the highlight of any season, and he expects the 2009 final to provide the excitement and drama that characterised all the previous finals. Corporate Communications Manager at PowerGen, Margaret Ann-Patino said that her organisation is proud to be a sponsor of the SSCL for the past 14 years, and pledged to continue the legacy for many years to come. CEO and General Secretary of the T&TCB, Forbes Persaud thanked PowerGen for its continued support in the promotion of cricket throughout the twin island republic. He noted that without the partnership between PowerGen and the SSCL, cricket would have been in a terrible state in T&T. Admission is free.
