LOCAL CRICKET ROUND-UP
May 28th 2009

Cane Farm set to take East Zone title

Cane Farm United turned in an outstanding performance to come from behind and claim full points against Agents Sports Club in the East Zone of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’ Dvision One competition as their eight round match, which ended over the weekend at Crown Trace Recreation Ground, Tacarigua.

As a result Cane Farm took their points tally to 165 with their nearest rivals Mico Eym second on 135 and seemed well set to lift the title.

Cane farm owe their victory mainly to National Under 15 cricketer Anthony Simmons and former East youth player Sheldon Balroop who produced outstanding all round performances to guide their team to victory.

Simmons had overall match figures of nine for 106 and Balroop eight for 58.

When their team batted Balroop (42) was the top scorer in the first innings while Simmons was unbeaten on 21 when they got to the required target.

Agents batted first and piled up 177 before they were bowled out with Anthony Singh leading the way with 61 supported by Zaheer Khan (21).

Cane Farm in their reply, despite Balroop’s resistance, could only get to 156 before their innings ended.

Batting a second time Agents had no answer to Simmons and Balroop and were dismissed for a mere 68 runs. This left Cane Farm a victory target of 90 which they easily got after losing three wickets.

Early preparations for Balmain

Ramlagan’s Balmain United Cricket Club is set to begin an early preparation for the 2010 cricket season.

This was revealed by the club’s President Mishri Lutchmedial recently. Lutchmedial said his community and club is fully committed to youth and club development.

According to Lutchmedial, they are not going to seek funding to pay anyone to play cricket.

“Whatever small we have and can afford will be spent on the young ones of our community. This is the only way we can bring back this patriotic feelings and sence of pride to play for your village or community,” Luchmedial said.

A coaching programme will commence in early July and run to September with another to start in October to December. This is for age groups Under 12 and Under.
