Singh guides Esperanza to easy win

Garvin Singh of Ali’s Esperanza Sports emerged as the star player during the opening round of the T&T Cricket Board and Blue Waters T20 InterZone Club Championship played at various venues across T&T.

Allrounder Singh slammed an unbeaten 88 to help Esperanza to a healthy 184 for three against RJB Swansea at the Esperanza Recreation Ground.

In reply, Swansea were restricted to a modest 130 for nine, with Singh picking up three for 22.

In other matches, C&B of Tobago defeated OJs by four wickets at Shaw Park, while Santa Cruz recorded a 10-wicket win at Gasparillo. And in Arima, Agents whipped Trenchtown by seven wickets.

In the semifinals carded for Sunday, Esperanza will host C&B at the Esperanza Recreation Ground, while the venue for the Santa Cruz and Agents match is yet to be announced.

This new competition by the T&TCB is sponsored by Blue Waters to the tune of $100,000.

AT ARIMA: Trenchtown 112 (19.3) (Anthony Singh 2-27, Anthony Rampersad 2-25, Stephen Gopie 2-17) v Agents 115-3 (Anthony Rampersad 50 not out, Vinode Ragoonath 43 not out, K Kenny 2-24). Agents won by 7 wkts. Anthony Rampersad (MoM).

AT GASPARILLO: Clarke Rochard 132-8 (20) (Clint Richards 41, (Clint Richards 41, Frank Sorzano 3-18) v Santa Cruuz 133 for 0 (16.2) (Barry Nicholas 65 not out, Dexter Sweene 60 not out). Santa Cruz won by 10 wkts. Barry Nicholas (MoM).

AT ESPERANZA: 184-3 (20) (Garvin Singh 88 not out) v RJB Swansea 130-9 (20) (Shammi Bissoon 29, Garvin Singh 3-22, Deodath Arjune 2-14). Esperanza won by 54 runs. Garvin Singh (MoM).


Doodnath: South Zone more vibrant than ever

Chairman of the South Zone of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), Leo Doodnath, has described the cricket activities of his Zone as “more vibrant than ever.”

Doodnath, who is also the president of the Penal Sports Association was speaking at the launch of the Zone’s JNCO sponsored Over-35 competition held last Sunday.

The second vice president of the T&TCB said, “2009 is really proving to be very hectic and more vibrant than ever in terms of the amount of cricket organised by the South Zone.

“Of course we have already successfully completed the Seniors and Division One of our League competition. T&TEC has emerged as winner of Seniors, with Junior winning in the Seniors Reserve, and San Francique crowned champion of Division One. All clubs have already been notified of these standings. A total of $50,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the various winners of this competition.”

On Corpus Christi day (June 11), the zone hosted the final of the second annual T20 competition at Evergreen’s Ground, with Clarke Rochard emerging as winner to last year’s beaten finalist, San Francique. Clarke Rochard will receive $6,000 and San Francique $4,000.

On Labour Day (June 19), the Ramsinghs 35 Overs final was played between San Francique and Cosmos at HYO Ground. San Francique won. A total of $10,000 in vouchers for cricket gear will be distributed to participating clubs from the quarterfinal stage up to the final.

The semifinal stage of another additional competition, the Ramlogan Reserve Teams 30 Overs, with Juniors up against T&TEC at Woodland Ground, and Petrotrin vs Clarke Rochard at Petrotrin on Saturday. The final of this competition is carded for Tuesday under lights at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre. Cash prizes are at stake in this competition as well.

The new JNCO Enterprises sponsored Over 35 Competition, will have 12 teams participating and vying for a total of $12,000 in cash prizes.
