TCL Group West Indies Youth Cricket Challenge
July 8, 2009

T&T takes on Jamaica in U19 opener

T&T Under-19 cricketers led by Yannick Ottley will open their quest for top honours, when they take on host country Jamaica in the opening round of the TCL Group West Indies Youth Cricket Challenge at Kensington Gound in Kingston.

Three newcomers have been selected on the U-19 team to participate in the tournament from Thursday to August 6.

Promising opening batsman Amir Khan, fast bowlers Teshawn Castro and Aneil Harrypersad are the new faces in the 14-member squad.

The 17-year-old Ottley is one of five players, who was drafted from the T&T U-17 team on to the U-19 side in Barbados last year, after six cricketers were sent home for various disciplinary reasons.

The others were Nicholas Alexis, Rickson Maniram, Kissoondath Magram and Sachin Boodram. These players have also been selected on the team, who will be defending its limited overs title in Jamaica.

Speaking to the Trinidad Guardian late last night, manager of the T&T team, William Wallace said that despite no practice session was carded for yesterday, the well-knitted and disciplined team is ready and raring to go.

“ A team meeting was held with Head Coach, Kelvin Williams, and each player is looking ahead for the clash against the homesters. I expect that the guys will give a good account of themselves in this three-day championship,” Wallace said.

In the other games carded, defending champions Barbados will come up against the Windward Islands at Chedwin Park, while Guyana and the Leeward Islands will meet at Up Park Camp.

The official opening took place last night at the Mona Campus at the University of the West Indies.
