He stated that it is testimony to the quality of the membership of the organization, over the years, and its commitment to the game of cricket, that they have come together for a 53rd annual presentation function. “ The board has remained faithful to the vision of the pioneers of 1956 and other stalwarts who came to the fore, subsequently and who set out to ensure that cricket remained firmly fixed in the culture of Trinidad and Tobago,” Professor Richards stated. He praised the board for its achievements over the years. “ In 2008, it was the second time in three years, TTCB won the Jeffrey Stollmeyer Award for being the most outstanding national sporting organization. This I feel certain, is the result of the well organized development programmes, including coaching, that you have set up, the performance on the field of your players and the exposure that they have been gaining by the way of tours to other parts of the West Indies,” Professor Richards added. He told the distinguished gathering that the local board has an abiding vision for cricket in this country and by their unrelenting focus on young players, they are ensuring that there is a pool of talent from which the T&TCB, can draw, not just to produce a strong national team but to make a significant contribution to the revival of West Indies cricket. “Today, we are recognizing the achievements of a number of persons , many of them young players, as well as some who involved in the technical aspects and the administration of the game. The board’s success depends, to a considerable extent, on the combined efforts of participants at every level and, not least, on the support that it receives from the government, corporate sponsors as well as public at large,” Professor Richard said. He said that the clubs throughout Trinidad and Tobago have kept the game vibrant and attractive to the youth and they deserve the deepest appreciation. “They are providing avenues for the channeling of the energies of our young people into productive pursuits and the support that is given at official and at corporate level should not be taken lightly. Sport has a significant role to play in the well-being of the people of our nation and we should be ever mindful of this,” Professor Richards further stated. “My wife and I are both avid cricket fans, Her Excellency perhaps moreso than I and we are happy to note the achievements of the cricket community during the past year, among them being winners of the Regional U17, 19, and senior one-day regional tournament. The Under-17 team also triumphed in the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools tournament. This augurs well for cricket in Trinidad and Tobago and indeed for West Indies cricket, on the whole, whose fortunes within recent times, have not been what we West Indians would like them to be. But as David Rudder ,enjoins in his telling clarion calls, we continue to ‘rally round the West Indies’ and we know that better days are ahead,” he echoed. Meanwhile, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board will not be taking an active part in today’s annual general meeting of the West Indies Cricket Board in Antigua. This was hinted by President of the T&TCB, Deryck Murray during his remarks at the board’s local prize function. “We are not going to take-up a ‘business as usual’ attitude, when nothing is being done to address the real issues in regional cricket,” Murray said. He said an official release will be issued in due course. |
