Twenty20 clash for Haiti relief tonight
January 20, 2010

Dinanath RamnarineTICKET sales for today’s Twenty20 Charity match between TT and Guyana have been going well and WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine (pictured at right) is encouraging all persons to be at the Queen’s Park Oval in aid of Haiti. President George Maxwell Richards will be present to meet the players before the match in Port-of-Spain today.

Gates open at 2 pm while live entertainment starts at 5 pm. JW and Blaze have come on board to support the venture and will be there to deliver their 2010 soca hit “Palance”.

Other local acts include Patch, Shurwayne Winchester, Ravi B, Denise Belfon, Ziggy Rankin, Adesh Samaroo, De Fosto, Blackie, Maximus Dan, the Laventille Rhythm Section and more.

The match bowls off at 6:30 pm and organisers are reminding the public that no coolers will be allowed.

“Sales have been quite good. We still haven’t worked out the numbers yet but we are hoping that people come out and support,” he said.

Ramnarine revealed that special boxes will be at the Oval so patrons can drop off non- perishable items or cash donations for Haiti.

The WIPA boss revealed that he was elated with the response from the Guyana Cricket Board and TT Cricket Board after coming up with the plan for the match.

“I’m definitely satisfied. Everyone was keen to participate and give of their time for a worthy cause,” he said. Ramnarine praised the global aid and rescue efforts since the disaster but reminded all that more still has to be done.

“People are coming to the fore. There has been tremendous support but so much more can be done from the players’ perspective,” he said. Both teams arrived in Trinidad last night after playing to a draw in their WICB Four-Day match on Monday. TT and Guyana boast are arguably the top Twenty20 teams in the Caribbean and will resume their rivalry tonight.

Guyana defeated TT in the inaugural edition of the Stanford Twenty20 final in 2006 but since then, TT have been the dominant team in the West Indies, claiming victory in 2008 and thrilling the world at the Airtel Champions League where they finished as runners-up. Persons can still purchase tickets at a cost of $60 at KFC outlets in Valsayn, Chaguanas and San Fernando as well as at the Queen’s Park Oval.
