TTCB – News Cricket Board pays tribute to Carew
President of the T&TCB Azim Bassarath yesterday sent out his executive’s condolences to the family of Carew stating that the entire local and regional cricket community had suffered a irreparable loss which would be hard to replace. Bassarath said that Carew devoted his life to Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies cricket and also played a major role in helping former star West Indies batsman Brian Lara ascend the pinnacle of Test cricket. “Carew played an important part in the establishing Trinidad and Tobago as a powerhouse in regional cricket durfng the 1970s when he made his contribution as one of the most astute captains to lead a national team,” Bassarath said. “He was also known as a dashing opening batsman and later as a shrewd administrator at the local and regional level presiding as a Test selector when the West Indies was the number one team in the world for close to two decades. “Carew was well-respected for his independent point of view and for setting the bar higher than anyone else with his exacting standards which required the highest levels of professionalism,” said Bassarath. The local cricket chief also pointed out that Carew was always willing to impart his wide knowledge of the game to the younger players who will now miss his wise counsel and the local game will be much poorer by his passing. Carew played 19 Tests for the West Indies and scored 1,127 stylish runs finishing his career at the top level with a creditable 34.15 average. He also took eight Test wickets wen called upon as a change bowler. |
