East captures Courts Inter Zone crown
June 2, 2011

EAST ZONE, captained by former national cricketer Denzil James overpowered South East to win the Courts Inter Zone title by six wickets on Wednesday at the Avinash Samaroo Park in Endeavour, Chaguanas.

The 40-Over affair for clubs not participating in the Premier or Championship competitions organized by the T&T Cricket Board provided several outstanding individual performances with Damian Peters of East emerging the “Man-of-the-Match” with four wickets for 43 runs.

His prize was two tickets to witness the second Digicel One-Day International between the West Indies and India on Wednesday (June 8, 2011) at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain.

Peters ripped out the heart of the South East top order, after they were put into bat. At one stage they were 98 for 6 but were rescued by a fighting innings of 38 not out, including four boundaries, by Sheldon Ramharack to help his team reach 167.

He received admirable support from Christian Ramcharan who made 24 (three fours) and Ellon Lewis (18).

Facing a competitive total, Andrew Lyght Jnr topscored with 40, including three maximums and two four to seal the East victory. At the end, not out batsmen Navindra Bridgelal (32, four boundaries) and Stephen Wharwood (22, two fours) made sure the Wendell Eversley managed team got home with relative ease in just 25 overs finishing on 168 for four wickets.

Shaun Williams who captured two wickets for 48 runs in his allotted eight overs was the pick of the South East bowlers but the outcome was never in doubt as the East batsmen appreciated the fast outfield at Endeavour.

It was an auspicious occasion for both teams as they were playing playing a competitive match for the first time under lights, but were told that more opportunities will be presented to them in the near furture to showcase their skills.

Dudnath Ramkessoon, first vice-president of the T&TCB said at the presentation ceremony after the match that everyone connected with staging the final must be complimented for a job well done and he was also high in praise of the players who he described as demonstrating the best qualities in the game.

President of the T&TCB, Azim Bassarath who witnessed the final said he was very impressed with the development of the Avinash Samaroo Park, east of Price Plaza in Chaguanas as a venue worthy of staging many more finals in the future.

Courts Inter Zone Final

South East 167 for eight (Sheldon Ramharack 37 n.o.; Christian Ramcharan 24; Ellon Lewis 18; Damian Peters 4 for 23) lost to East 168 for four (Andrew Lyght 40; Navindra Bridgelal 32; Stephan Wharwood 22 n.o.; Shaun Williams two for 48).
