TTCB – News Umpire Payne leaves void in local cricket THE LOCAL cricket community was plunged into mourning at the passing of veteran umpire Robert Payne whose sudden demise came mere days after serving as a member of the Auxiliary Staff for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Under-15 Championships here in Trinidad. Payne, who was in his mid-60s became a well-known figure in his white coat after taking up officiating more than four decades ago when his playing days ended as a batsman and right-arm spinner with Unity and Sporting Club in the North Zone of the T&T Cricket Board competitions. On Thursday, Azim Bassarath, as president of the T&TCB and also vice-president of the Umpires and Scorers’ Council paid glowing tribute to Payne who he said epitomized all the great qualities that moulded him into a respected official by players and fans. “Payne was knowledgeable and exercised his duties on the field with honesty. He was a true exemplar of the game and will be missed by the entire cricket community. On behalf of the T&T Cricket Board I extend my deepest condolences to his wife and family,” said a tearful Bassarath. As recently as last Friday (July 15), Payne attended the closing ceremony and awards function for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Under-15 Championships and news of his death on Wednesday morning shocked everyone who last recalled him as being in robust health. Steve Martel, secretary of the North Zone of the T&TCB yesterday said Payne leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. He remembered Payne as a devout Catholic and a lay minister with the St Mary’s Church in Mucurapo. “Payne was also an Umpire’s Representative serving three consecutive two-year terms on the North Zonal Council of the T&T Cricket Board. He was a pillar of the North Zone and will be missed by all who came into contact with him,” said Martel on Thursday. Martel said Payne was soon to be honoured by the Queen’s Park Cricket Club for his outstanding service having officiated for five straight years in their annual Cricket Fiesta, an award which he is now expected to be given posthumously. The funeral of Payne will take place on Friday from 1 pm at the St Mary’s Church in Mucurapo.
