Local cricket mourns friend Roop Dass
November 28, 2011

THE Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (T&TCB) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of freelance journalist Herman Roop Dass who passed away on Saturday at the age of 81 following a short illness.

President of the T&TCB Azim Bassarath said he was saddened to learn of Roop Dass’ passing and paid tribute to the Couva resident’s  long and important association with the game of cricket,  reporting on the activities of the Board from its headquarters in Balmain.

“Herman was no stranger to the National Cricket Centre and always attended our functions and media conferences since he took his job very seriously. He played an important role in relaying to the public through his pen and camera all the positive elements association with the T&T Cricket Board and the young natural talent that abounds in our country,” said Bassarath.

The T&TCB chief recalled that Roop Dass took particular interest in the activities and achievements of all organisations on his beat, i.e. around central Trinidad and he could be counted on always to cover Cricket Board assignments frequently on short notice.

“T&T Cricket has indeed lost a very dear friend and we pay tribute to Herman’s wonderful nature and easy- going manner which endeared him to all in the cricket fraternity. We will miss him tremendously,” said Bassarath.

Roop Dass, a former school principal and secretary of the T&T Table Tennis Federation was associated with both the Trinidad Guardian and Newsday newspapers . His funeral service has been planned for Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at the Couva Presbyterian Church starting at 11 am.
