Castro shoots down young Aussies
A Caribbean Developmental team led by T&T all-rounder Yannick Ottley held the upper hand against the touring Australia Under-16 side at the end of a rain-shortened opening day’s play, of a two-day cricket match at the Sir Frank Worrell Ground, University of the West Indies, St Augustine, here on Wednesday. The young Australians after being inserted struggled
against a well-disciplined bowling attack and were skittled out for a
measly 96 in 52 overs. The Caribbean team closed on 22 for one after nine overs, when bad light stopped play with at 5.12 pm with 29 overs remaining. Left-handed opening batsman Evin Lewis is not out on eight, and all-rounder Yannic Cariah unbeaten on seven. They lost the wicket of Grenadian opening batsman Dennis Smith caught at the wicket by Benn Smith from the bowling of Alex Pycroft for three in the third over of the innings. Castro, a Central Trinidad fast bowler, showed that he is one to be considered for the future, with an intelligent spell of bowling, as he broke the back of the Australian batting line-up. The regional team, coached by former Leeward Islands and West Indies middle-order batsman Keith Arthurton lended good support to Castro with a high level of out-cricket. Several players who represented the West Indies team in the Clico International U-15 Championships held in the region earlier this year have been included in the Caribbean team. Among them are Kaveem Hodge (Dominica), Akeem Saunders (Leewards) and Sunil Ambris (St Vincent and the Grenadines). Also in the regional team line-up is Barbados’s U-19
pacer Jason Holder. Caribbean X1: |
