Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Cricket League
May 7th 2008

Christmas scores second hundred in ALNG schools cricket

Brian Christmas is turning out to be the star performer for the 2008 season of the Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Cricket League. Captain of St Pius RC Primary School in Arouca, Christmas scored his second unbeaten century in the Super League last Friday when he led his school to their third consecutive victory in the Division.

Playing in a postponed third round match at Inshan Ali Park in Preysal, Christmas stroked a stylish 112 not out, studded with 15 fours, as he led St. Pius to a commanding 259 for four in their allotted 35 overs against Rochard Douglas Presbyterian.

A member of T&T’s Under-13 squad in 2007, Christmas received excellent support from Kyle Ramoutar, 47, and Anthony Jaikaran, 35, as the St Pius batsmen put Rochard Douglas’ bowlers to the sword.

Rochard Douglas were bowled out for 108 in 25.3 overs, leaving St. Pius victors by a massive 151 run-margin. Isaiah Mapp (4 for 12), Ramoutar (2 for 15) and Christmas (2 for 16) were the destroyers for St. Pius, who have chalked up three consecutive victories to lead the standings in the Super League. Christmas was named Man-of-the-Match.

In the three rounds completed so far, Christmas has scored a total of 246 runs, including two centuries, without being dismissed. He scored an unbeaten 116 in a second round match against Mayaro Government. He has also taken a total of 16 wickets in the three matches, with identical hauls of seven for 12 in the first two games.

Not surprisingly, Christmas has won the Man-of-the-Match awards on all three occasions. The star all-rounder is on course to eclipse the phenomenal batting record of Stephen Katwaroo, who blazed five centuries for Clarke Road Government Primary School in the 2006 season. The best known cricketer to pass through the Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Cricket League, Katwaroo was captain of the successful West Indies Under-15 team which competed in the just-concluded Clico Under 15 International Cricket Competition.

At the end of Round Three of the Super League Division, St Pius are the only team with a perfect record of three victories. Newcomers to the league after gaining promotion as runners-up in the Inter-School Boys Division last year, St Pius have established themselves as favourites to capture the premier title in their first year.

Rochard Douglas Presbyterian and Guayaguayare RC have registered two victories each.
