Thompson century puts Merry Boys on top
....... PowerGen in control

FORMER champions PowerGen Sports Club were in a good position to force an outright win against W Connection Wanderers in Round Three of the Eastern Credit Union National Cricket League, at Syne Village in Penal. On the opening day of the two-day contest yesterday, PowerGen led by three-wicket-hauls from off-spinner Vaaroon Samaroo (3-8), left-arm spinner Rishi Bachan (3-18) and leg-spinner Samuel Badree (3-24) routed the visitors for a meagre 89.

Only hard-hitting allrounder Navin Stewart with 28 offered resistance to the potent spin attack employed by skipper Badree.

In response, PowerGen closed on 136 for four to establish an important 47-run lead going in today’s final day’s play.

Former T&T and West Indies youth player, Bachan, cracked solid 63 for the home team.

At Serpentine Road, Ceramic Merry Boys Sports led by fine century by former T&T middle-order batsman Kenton Thompson, tallied a modest 221 against Clico Preysal Sports.

The right-handed Thompson scored an even hundred in 129 minutes off 112 balls and included 10 fours and one six.

He was well supported by former T&T youth batsman Franklyn Rouse who made 54.

Leading bowler for Preysal was former T&T youth fast bowler Kwesi Roy with five for 44. He received admirable support from former Barbados and West Indies allrounder Ryan Hurley who bagged three for 58. Preysal in their turn at the crease, were tottering on 27 for four when stumps were drawn.

At Wilson Road in Penal, reigning champions FCB Clarke Road United and Munroe Road Sports were engaged in an interesting contest.

Batting first, the visiting Munroe Road scored a competitive 217 in 80 overs, with former T&T youth batsman Darry Balgobin hitting a fluent 72 with 12 fours.

Former T&T off-spinner Mukesh Persad was the leading bowler for Clarke Road with five for 58, while Windward Islands fast bowler Kenroy Peters had figures of four for 37.

Clarke Road in reply, closed on 47 for one. In Division Two at the Aranguez Savannah, Malcolm Ramlogan hit an unbeaten 58 to help British/Aranguez Sports to a decent 220 against Defence Force. The army/navy combination in reply, closed on 47 for two.

Matches conclude today.

Day 2 - March 24th 2008

PowerGen Sports Club spun their way to an outright victory over W Connection Wanderers during round three action of the Eastern Credit Union National Cricket League, at Syne Village in Penal yesterday. W.Connection, after bowling out their hosts for 201, with pacer Atiba Alert leading the way with 6-77 and skipper Nicholas Ramjass 4-72 were then skittled out for a paltry 115. Leg-spinner Samuel Badree 4-21 and off-spinner Farrel Jugmohan 3-25 were the chief destroyers. The southerners then made light work of the four runs required for victory, and ran away with victory by 10 wickets.

At Serpentine Road, Clico Preysal narrowly escaped defeat against this year`s Carib Sunday League champs Ceramic Merry Boys. The visitors were routed for a measly 94, with former T&T speedster Kyron Lynch 5-35 and newcomer Murad Khan 4-35 among the wickets. Former West Indies batsman Lincoln Roberts hit a quickfire 72 not out along with the in-form wicket-keeper Samuel Felix 45 not out, as the Deigo Martin based team declared on 155-2. Set a mammoth 283 for victory, Preysal were left tottering at 110-7 at the end of the play. Kenton Thomspon followed up his first innings century, grabbing 3-4, with his tidy off-spinners. At Wilson Road in Penal, defending champions FCB Clarke Road walked away with 1st innings points against Munroe Road. The hosts replying to Munroe Road`s 1st innings total of 217, notched up 300-7 declared, Sean Siloch hitting 78 and Mahadeo Bodoe chipping in with 55. Munroe Road in their 2nd reply at the crease were left stuggling at 82-5. The match ending in a draw.
