ROUND-UP Wight to be honoured at North-East Sunday League final LONG-SERVING administrator and umpire, Walter Wight will be honoured during today’s North-East Zone Sunday League 35-over- final between Explorers and Unique at the Brooklyn Recreation Ground in Sangre Grande. The affable Wight has been a long-standing member of the Zone for over four decades , which he has served with great distinction. As an umpire, Wight has officiated at the highest level in domestic cricket. Several prominent persons from the community and officials of the T&T Cricket Board including hard-working CEO and General Secretary, Forbes Persaud, are expected to attend the match and also pay tribute to Wight. Clarke Road youngsters celebrate THE SECOND annual graduation ceremony of the UTT/SPORTT Clarke Road United Cricket Development Unit will take place today at its club house Wilson Road Recreation Ground in Penal, starting at 10 am. This highly successful youth development effort, under the technical guidance of Dasrath Maharaj, was implemented in partnership with the University of Trinidad and Tobago, The Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited, Flavorite Foods Limited, Regal Products Limited and Kitchen Centre Limited. Over 140 participants accessed this initiative which included both educational and field coaching modules. Two primary and three secondary schools were utilised as development centres, taking the programme closer to the participants, while emphasising the sport / education linkage. Among the top coaches conducting sessions for the youngsters were Glenn Dwarika, Simboonath Beepat and Chanardath Mahabir. Sports Co-ordinator of UTT, Ken Butcher will deliver the feature address. Nur e Islam wins TML/R KHAN Windball final NUR E ISLAM captured the TML/R KHAN Trading Night Windball final, when they defeated Endeavour Jamaat by eight on Saturday at the TML Grounds in St Joseph. Nur e Islam won the toss and chose to field, a move that paid rich dividends as the opposition was restricted to 67 for seven off the allotted 12 overs. T&T senior team opener was the only batsman to offer resistance with a hard-fought 18. In reply, Nur e Islam cruised to victory in 11 overs, losing two wickets in the process. Rohan Parsan made an unbeaten 24, while Zahir Ali scored 19. Nur e Islam collected $5,000 plus trophy and medals, while for their game effort, Endeavour picked up $3,000. Al Muquatiloon Jamaat of Chin Chin captured the prestigious discipline award trophy plus $2,000. Other winners on the night were Nyron Ali of Bamboo Jamaat (most runs - 127) and Arshad Khan of ASJA Markaz, who was named as the ‘Most Promising Player’ of the tournament. Oval lights to be tested tonight THE NEW installed floodlights at the Oval will be tested tonight when the Queen’s Park Cricket Festival bowls tonight at 7 pm. According to former T&T and West Indies opening batsman Bryan Davis, the official launch of the $7m floodlights will be held later in the year. Davis said that the ‘Cricket Festival’ is mainly for the club’s amateur cricketers who often take part in fete match games. He stated that the ‘Cricket Festival’ started in 2001with four teams and has now grown to 14 sides in 2008. JGCL San Francique and Young Lions in Ramsingh’s final Jokhan General Contractors Limited San Francique United will meet Young Lions of Piparo in the finals of the Ramsingh sponsored South Zone limited overs cricket series toiday. The finals which will be of 35-over duration will be played at the Hermitage Youth Organisation Grounds in Phillipine from 12.30 pm. Winners of the match will take away $5,000, while the second place team will get $3,000. President of the South Zone and second vice-president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), Leo Doodnath as well as other Zone officials and sponsors will meet the players before the start of the match. |
