ROUND-UP Butcher lauds Clarke Road development work SPORTS Co-ordinator at the University of T&T, Ken Butcher, has lauded the vision and the implementation of Clarke Road United Development Programme at the clubs recent youth graduation function. Addressing a club house packed with graduates and parents on Indian Arrival Day at Wilson Road in Penal, Butcher made specific mention of the linkages between sport and education and informed those present of the availability of sporting scholarships, from UTT, for those who can display the requisite sporting skills coupled with educational acumen. He explained to the audience, the UTT’s involvement in elite coaching of volleyball, table tennis, basketball, cricket, boxing, swimming and chess. In his opening remarks, club President, Baldath Mahabir, waxed historical as he reminded those present of the not too distant past, where each year only four or five villages accessed Secondary School education via success at the now obsolete Common Entrance Exams. “At present, there is a defined pathway for those so inclined and so motivated, to access education all the way to tertiary level. The partnership between the UTT, the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago and communities such as Clarke Road, brings opportunity to your doorsteps, and in a nice way too, via sport.” said Mahabir. “Love sport, love education, excellence at sport gives opportunities for education,” Mahabir ended. Dasrath Maharaj, Technical Director, gave an overview of the programme before naming outstanding graduates. The programme also benefited from generous inputs by Flavorite Foods Ltd, Regal Products Ltd and Kitchen Centre Ltd. More than 140 participants accessed this initiative which included both educational and field coaching modules. Two primary and three secondary schools were utilised as development centres, taking the programme closer to the participants, while emphasising the sport/education linkage.
