The 17-year-old Barath led the team in last year’s tournament in St Kitts and Nevis which gave a below par performance and the dapper right-handed batsman will be hoping for an improved showing this time around. Team manager and executive member of the T&T Cricket Board, William Wallace was quite impressed with the team’s performance on Saturday. “Both openers, Barath and Jumadeen looked the part. Preparations are going according to plans. The guys are rounding into good form for the regional series,” Wallace stated. He stated that the team started a five-day live-in camp last night at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Development Centre in Balmain. “ The team will have a two-hour session each morning during the camp on mental development. In the afternoon , the focus will be on physical training and net practice,” Wallace added. St. Pius bags Atlantic Super League schools cricket title St. Pius Boys RC Primary School were crowned champions of the Super League Division of the Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Cricket League when they completed a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Rochard Douglas Presbyterian at Guaracara Park, Pointe a Pierre, on Friday night. Paced by an excellent all-round performance by captain Anthony Jaikaran, the Arouca-based St. Pius rattled up their victory target of 102 off just 20 overs after restricting Rochard Douglas to a modest 101 all out in 28.3 overs. After losing star batsman Brian Christmas for just eight runs, Jaikaran, 34 not out, teamed with opener Kyle Ramoutar, 42 not out, in an unbroken 80-run partnership to seal the virtual walkover. Immediately after the winning run was hit, teachers, parents, classmates and village supporters numbering in their hundreds, swamped the victorious St. Pius team, who were playing in the premier Super League Division for the first time ever. A jubilant Jaikaran, who won the Man-of-the-Match award for his batting feat and bowling figures of three for 17, received the Super League Challenge trophy from Atlantic’s LNG’s Gervon Abraham. Rochard Douglas, who won the toss and took first strike under sunny skies, lost their first wicket in the second over with the score on five. They lost wickets at regular intervals, with four run outs on the scorecard. Only one batsman, Shashi Ramdeo, who made 11, reached double figures. Rochard Douglas were helped to their total by wayward bowling from St. Pius who conceded 38 wides, as their bowlers found it almost impossible to find their line. Going after their target under lights, St. Pius suffered an early setback, losing Christmas with the score on 22, but Jaikaran and Ramoutar batted sensibly, running well between the wickets and stroking the occasional boundary. After the expected victory, Paul Cameron, Principal of St. Pius Boys RC, said the team had practised hard throughout the season and displayed great teamwork. He said the victory was a tribute to the team, the teachers, the coaches, parents and the entire community and one of the greatest achievements for the school Coach of the St. Pius team, Sylvester Sandiford, was too emotional to give his reactions but joined assistant coach and fellow teacher, Peter Leela, in the celebrations. Benjamin Santoo, coach/teacher of runners-up Rochard Douglas, said while his boys tried their best, they were outplayed by a better team. He added, however, that he had several good young players who would do well in the years ahead. Anthony Ramjit, President of the National Primary Schools Cricket League, said the season had been a very successful one with several players displaying real talent for the future. He thanked sponsors Atlantic LNG, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Sport & Youth Affairs and the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) for partnering with the league to ensure the development of cricket at primary school level. TTCB CEO, Forbes Persaud, as well as T&T cricket captain Darren Ganga, was on hand to lend support to the budding cricketers. Also on hand to witness the final were several officials of the Ministry of Education, including Schools Supervisor 11, Kelvin Sookansingh; Caroline Forde, Physical Education Officer 11; and Bachan Boochoon, a former national age-group coach.
