Four national cricketers complete coaching course

OUT of favour T&T and West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul was one of twenty participants who were successful at the West Indies Level One Coaching Course which was held last week at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Development Centre at Balmain, Couva.

Rampaul who is eyeing a return to the T&T national team for the up-coming West Indies Limited Overs Championships in Miami, was one of four senior national cricketers who passed the exams.

The others were allrounders Rayad Emrit and Samuel Badree and wicketkeeper/batsman Gibran Mohammed.

Leading in the exams were Geet Harripaul and Sunil Beepath.

Among the facilitators were West Indies Cricket Board Territorial Officer in Barbados, Wendell Coppin, former West Indies Women’s Test captain, Stepanie Power, T&T’s national coach, Kelvin Williams, and West Indies Cricket Board Level Two coach, Roy Saroop.

The participants went through several modules on how to coach, fitness in cricket, batting, bowling and fielding drills, bio-mechanics and skills acquisation. Presentations were further enhanced by video footage.

At a short function which followed the conclusion of the course on Friday, Coppin expressed his delight at having T&T and West Indies players in the course.

“ They were role models for the other participants and especially the kids,” Coppin stated.

CEO and General Secretary of the T&T Cricket Board, Forbes Persaud was high in praise of the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment shown.

“ I am extremely happy at the enthusiasm shown by the senior cricketers. They led by example. I am looking forward for more Level One and Two courses later this year,” Persaud said.

Joseph heads South-West Umpires

THE SOUTH-West Zonal Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association held its first annual general meeting recently at the Iere High School in Siparia. The main purpose of the meeting was to re-establish its commitment to local and zonal cricket.

During the period January to August, 2008 the SWZCU&SA was managed by an interim committee appointed by the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Umpires and Scores Council (TTCU&SC).

The interim committee held a seminar on 26th and 27th January 2008 for practicing and non-practicing umpires and scores, drafting of a zonal constitution and appoint umpires to service games throughout the South West Zone.

The interim committee also prepared six candidates for the WICUA Final Written Examination, which took place on August 10, these candidates are presently awaiting results.

The AGM was mainly to elect and appoint members to serve and manage the affairs of the SWZCU&SA for the period September 2008 to September 2009. The result of the election was as follows:

Officers: President- Steve Joseph Vice President- Lyndon Rajkumar. Secretary- Stephen Lakhram. Assistance Secretary- Dane Daniel. Treasurer: - Leon Joseph.

Committee Members: Miss Lilly Joseph, Martin Renails, Dave Ryan and Seukaran Sookram. Delegates to TTCU&SC: Steve Joseph, Lyndon Rajkumar and Seukaran Sookram.

Representatives to SWZCC: Martin Renails, Steve Joseph.

Auditor - Ann Marie Charles.

North schools celebrate in October

THE ANNUAL presentation function of the North Zone of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League will take place on October 18, Port-of-Spain City Hall at Knox Street, from 5.30 pm.

During the 2008 season, outstanding honours were shared by Fatima College in the Under 14, Malick Senior Comprehensive in the Seniors, St Mary’s College in the U16, Diego Martin Government Secondary in the Girls Open and Fatima/Success Laventille in Form One.

In the Knock-Out, Tranquillity, Maple Leaf and Belmont Secondary were successful, while St Mary’s College became the new National Under-16 champions.

The five ‘Cricketers of the Year’ in each division, the ‘Personality of the Year’, the ‘Most Valuable Player’, the ‘ Individual of the Year’ and the award for ‘Excellence in Academics and Sport will be announced at the function.

Several dignitaries have been invited to grace the occasion with their presence.

Klondykes win Chaguanas Independence Windball tourney

KLONDYKES Sports Club of Aranguez emerged winners of the Chaguanas Borough Windball Cricket Tournament, when they defeated Combine Players in the final on Independence Day, at the Edingburgh 500 Recreational Facility in Chaguanas.

Organised by the Chaguanas Improvement Committee, the well-oiled Klondykes team, led by Vickram Boodram whipped their Central counterparts by 29 runs to capture the top prize of $5,000 plus a trophy. No teams from Chaguanas were able to advance to the semi-final round, having been knocked out by visiting teams in the preliminary stages of the competition.

Defending champions Tristan Hearts of Arouca was only able to capture the third prize of $2,000 and a trophy.

Several dignitaries took part in the exciting tourney including T&T and West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and CEO and General Secretary of the T&T Cricket Board, Forbes Persaud.

Eleven thousand dollars in cash and incentives were distributed to the various teams.

Main sponsor was Attorney Prakash Ramadhar. Other donors were CMMB, Scotia Bank, NLCB, Unique Furniture Stores and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.

Honour Roll:

Winner - Klondykes Sports Club - $5,000 plus trophy.
Runner-up - Combine Players - $3,000 plus trophy.
3rd Prize - Tristan Hearts - $2,000 plus trophy.
Most Wickets - Hemman Mack - Combine Players -$500 plus medal
Most Runs - Richard Ali - Klondykes Sports Club -$500 plus medal.
