Sir Garfield Sobers International U-17

TT retains Uner-17 Title

T&T U-17 cricketers gave a spirited performance as they successfully defended their Sir Garfield Sobers International title, when they defeated the Lodge School by 21 runs in the final at the Kensington Oval, yesterday.(Tuesday).

Chasing a victory target of 169 runs from 37 overs, Lodge School were undermined by the probing leg-spin of 14-year-old Kissoondath Magram and were restricted to 147 for nine. The right-arm pint-sized bowler sent down eight overs for a miserly 17 runs and captured three wickets.

Principal scorers for the Lodge School were Jamal Springer with 30 and Dario Weir 29. It was the second straight title for the T&T team, in only their second year in the tournament.

Last year, they defeated Combermere High School in the final at this same venue. Earlier, T&T skipper Yanick Ottley won the toss and decided to take first strike on a competitive batting strip.

T&T were off to a good start with opening batsman, Nicholas Alexis (27) and Kerwin Sirju (18) posting 49 in 49 minutes off 80 deliveries for the first wicket partnership.

The partnership ended when the duo was involved in a terrible mix-up, with the end result being Sirju going by the run-out route. There was another useful partnership by Ottley (14) and Sachin Boodram (35) which yielded 44 runs in 34 minutes from 42 balls. The left-handed Boodram struck four fours and a six off 40 balls in his entertaining innings. T&T eventually reached 168 for eight in 37 overs. Top bowlers for the Lodge School were fast bowler Dario Weir with three wickets for 27 runs, and off-spinner Jason Clarke three for 37. Coach of the T&T team, Tarrandath Sammy said that it was a pleasing performance and they thoroughly deserved the championship. " They are well-knitted team, who jelled together. They rose to the occasion, when it mattered most. It is a fitting tribute to the T&T Cricket Board age-group programmes, " Sammy stated. The victorious  T&T team will leave for Port-of-Spain on Saturday.
