SOUTH ZONE LIMITED OVERS

Young Lions capture South Zone limited overs crown

YOUNG LIONS cricket club are the new South Zone, Ramsingh limited overs champions.

This, after they defeated Jokan Construction San Francique United by 72 runs in the finals at Chapman Park in Hermitage on Indian Arrival Day. A good crowd was on hand to support the teams and there was a lot of friendly banter between the sponsors of the respective teams.

The battle began at 1 pm after South Zone secretary Carl Birjah met the players in the absence of chairman Leo Doodnath who was out of the country. And when the dust cleared Young Lions supporters were the ones celebrating a excellent performance.

Batting first, Young Lions Sports Club made an impressive 196 all out in 34 overs. Skipper Hayden Ragbir top scored with 36 and was well supported by Shazim Khan 36 and Denzel Halls 28.

San Francique chasing a winning target of 197 runs at 5.62 runs per over, lost wickets at regular intervals and could not mount a meaningful challenge. After 26 overs they were bowled out for 124—losing the match by 72 runs.

Man of the match Denzel Halls was spectacular with the ball, taking four wickets for 32 runs, while the evergreen Reynold Siewdass took two wickets for 12 runs and Ragbir two wickets for 19 runs.

President of Young Lions Cricket Club, Mozamil Mohammedally said he was thrilled with the win. “The win was great for us and we are really happy for the fans of the club. This team has worked hard throughout the season and it is good to see that hard work paying off.”

For their efforts Young Lions will receive $5,000 worth of sporting equipment from sponsors Ramsingh.

SCORES: Young Lions 192 all out (34overs)( Hayden Ragbir 36, Shazim Khan 36, Denzel Halls 28) v 124 all out (Denzell Halls 4/32, Reynold Siewdass 2/12, Hayden Ragbir 2/19). Young Lions won by 72 runs.
