Limited Overs U-19 The winner of the T&T and Guyana clash tomorrow (Friday) at Queen's Park will come up against either defending champions, Jamaica or three-day winners Barbados in the final carded for Saturday at the Banks Brewery Cricket Ground. Guyana leads Group B with four points after they defeated Leewards on Tuesday, while T&T has two and must beat Guyana to reach the final. In yesterday's rain-ruined encounter, there were no fewer than four stoppages for rain, with the last being at 4.14 pm. And after several deliberations by the umpires, play was called off at 4.48 pm. The showers came as a blessing in disguise for T&T, who were on the ropes on 41 for three after 8.5 overs, chasing a revised target of 154 in 26 overs and two of their top batsmen - skipper Adrian Barath (22) and Evin Lewis (2) back in the dressing room. Leading bowler for the Leewards was fast bowler Adelvin Phillip who grabbed three for 14 in a hostile spell of bowling. Earlier, the Leeward Islands won the toss and opted for first strike in overcast conditions. T&T's technical staff decided at the last minute to omit pint-sized leg-spinner Kissoondath Magram because of the small boundaries, which allowed Daron Beekah and Sachin Boodram to made their debut at U-19 level. But Leewards' decision to bat seemed unjustified when experienced opener Chesney Hughes was sent back for ten with the score on 17. However, exciting opener and skipper Keiran Powell and the inform Kjel Tyson tried desperately to rebuild the innings after Tyson found the boundary on two occasions. But the boys from the twin-island republic struck again at 43 when the key wicket of Powell caught by to his counter-part Barath at mid-off to medium pacer Hakeem Mitchell for 17. Despite, losing two quick wickets in succession, wicketkeeper/batsman Jamal Hamilton (31) and Tyson linked up and steadied the ship while they also participated in an important 53-run fifth -wicket stand off 72 balls that helped their team's total. The little right-hander Tyson looked compact against the penetrative T&T bowlers accumulating 48 runs from 67 balls which counted seven fours, while Hamilton knock of 31 runs, came off 43 balls with two fours. Kenroy David chipped in with 30 (1x4, 1x6) not out off 36 balls, when the next intervention for rain came at 2.05 pm and subsequently curtailed the Leeward Islands innings. Yannic Ottley, the left-arm orthodox spinner finished with two for 21 from his five overs while there was one wicket apiece for pacer Sheldon Dogan, Mitchell and Kjorn Ottley. Yesterday next match at the Combermere High School
between Barbados and Jamaica was also rained out, leaving Group A in a
toss up among them. |
