TCL Group Limited Overs U-19
T&T Under-19 in Limited Overs final
TT v Guyana Match Report
August 1, 2008

T&T youth cricketers surged into the final of the TCL Group West Indies Challenge Limited Overs competition, when they defeated Guyana by nine wickets yesterday, at the Queen's Park ground.

T&T will clash with  three-day champions and hosts Barbados in the final carded for today at the Banks Brewery ground.

In a rain-ruined contest, the T&T youngsters overwhelmed the Guyanese with a tremendous allround display in the match which was reduced to 24 overs per-side. Chasing a target of 87 under the Duckworth Lewis method, the Adrian Barath led-T&T team reached their landmark with 3.4 overs to spare.

Leading the victory charge for T&T were Nicholas Alexis who made an attractive unbeaten 37 and left-handed opening batsman Evin Lewis who was on  32 not out. The duo featured in a match-winning unbroken second partnership of  74 from 102 balls.

Alexis who was a key member of the T&T Under-17 team, which captured the 2008 Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools tournament cracked three fours in his innings which lasted 65 balls, while Lewis struck one four and two sixes during his knock which spanned 45 balls.

The pair came together after Barath (12) was snapped up at point by Seon Hetmyer off pacer Keyron Fraser in the third over with the total on 13.

They dominated the opposition bowling attack with sensible batting and intelligent running, which took the sting out of last year's beaten finalist.

Earlier, Guyana, won the toss and opted for first strike were reduced to 55 for three off 12 overs, after rain interrupted play at 10.54 am. Doing the damage was medium pacer Hakeem Mitchell who claimed the wickets of the first three Guyanese batsmen.

He accounted for Trevon Griffith (8), Royan Fredericks (13), and Seon Hetmyer (12) for figures of three for 34 at the rain break.

After several inspections of the outfield by umpires Richard Harrison and Andrew Farrell, it was decided to reduce the game to a 24-over-affair and play restarted 2.40 pm.

However, whatever plans the Guyanese had to up the tempo, were thwarted by a hostile three over spell by medium-pacer Akiel Cooper who bagged three wickets for eight put the opposition's innings in tatters.

With good support from spinners Sachin Boodram (1-4), Kjorn Ottley (1-5), the Guyanese innings folded for a meagre 88 in 22.3 overs.

Manager of the T&T team, William Wallace it one of the better performances by the youngsters in this year's series and the win will do the team a lot of good going into today's final. "

It was a win at the right team. The side is peaking at the correct time,"Wallace stated.

Rain also affected the contest between dethroned champions Jamaica and the Windward Islands at BET.

This match was abandoned after rain intervened with the Windward Islands on 105 for three after 16 overs.
