Limited Overs U-19 T&T lifts TCL limited overs trophy Chasing a victory target of 217 runs from the allotted 50 overs, Barbados was dismissed with the second ball of the last over for 208, much to the disappointment of the home supporters ahead of tomorrow's Crop Over Festival celebrations. Needing 11 runs from the final over bowled by 15-year-old Kissoondath Magram, the handful of T&T supporters went into a frenzy, when the pint-sized spinner had Shad Simmons caught in the deep by Nicholas Alexis. However, the star of the day was allrounder Kjorn Ottley who stroked an unbeaten 68 and bagged three for 47 to earn the 'Player of the Match' award. T&T's victory march was held up by a 102-run second wicket partnership from 144 balls by skipper Kyle Corbin (62) and rising star Kraigg Brathwaite (43), but was they were parted it was the beginning of the end for the young Bajans. Lending good support to Kjorn Ottley was national under-17 spinner Sachin Boodram who picked up two for 29 from his allotment of 10 overs. It was a fitting end for skipper Barath who was playing in his fourth and farewell year at this level and was praying to leave Bridgetown with some silverware. And to cap it of all, Barath bettered the previous best of 14 catches held by former West Indies captain Brian Lara. Barath held 16 catches in the three-day league championship. Earlier, before a large partisan crowd, T&T won the toss and opted for first strike on a competitive batting track. They were given a rousing start by Barath and left-handed batsman Evin Lewis as they posted 74 off 64 deliveries for the opening partnership, before the latter was bowled by bean pole fast bowler Jason Holder, for a well compiled 27, scored off 51 balls and included three fours and a six. T&T suffered two more big blows in quick succession, with the dismissals of Alexis (1) and Barath (37) and slipped to 96 for three. Alexis never looked the part and was caught and bowled by Roston Chase, while Barath who was looking well set for a big one was snapped up at point by Raymon Reifer off Holder's bowling. Barath faced 52 balls and struck four fours and one six. Vice-captain Kjorn Ottley and allrounder Akiel Cooper tried to repair the damage, but with the score on 131, Cooper was unfortunately run out for 17. There was a dramatic middle-order collapse as T&T slipped from a steady position of 131 for four to 166 for eight, with only the left -handed Kjorn Ottley standing in the way of the opposition's bowling attack. He added an important 26 for the ninth wicket with Sheldon Dogan (4) and a valuable 24 for the unbroken last wicket partnership with Kissoondath Magram (4. When the overs ran out, the well-mannered Ottley was
unbeaten on 68, scored off 95 balls with one four and two sixes. There
were two wickets apiece for Holder (2-25) and Shad Simmons (2-32). The
victorious T&T team will arrive at Piarco today at 10 am. |
