TTCB – Results TCL Group West
Indies U-19 Challenge
Final Day Match Report
July 26, 2008
Bajans win youth title
... T&T ends in third
T&T youth cricketers campaign in the TCL Group West
Indies U-19 Challenge league championship came to an end, yesterday,
when their final round match against dethroned champions, Guyana, ended
in a tame draw at Lester Vaughan in Cane Garden. T&T by virtue of
first innings lead ended in third place on 30 points in
six-team-standings, behind Guyana (34 pts) and newly crowned champions
Barbados (37). The Bajans captured their first championship league title
since 2002, when they copped the coveted trophy in Guyana. Barbados'
contest against Jamaica ended in a draw at BET.
Earlier, Adrian Barath declared the T&T first
innings at its overnight position of 336 for nine, lead of 109.
And there was a glimmer of hope of a T&T victory,
after the Guyanese were reduced to 69 for three, but a fighting fourth
wicket partnership of 89 in 106 minutes by Seon Hetmyer and Jonathan Foo
(48) guided them out of any further trouble. The right-handed Hetmyer
went on to score his maiden century in the series. His ton was compiled
in 279 minutes and 216 balls and contained 10 fours and one six. When
the captains decided to call of the match at 4.38 pm, Guyana were 289
for eight. Medium-pacer Akiel Cooper (3-47) and off-spinner Omesh
Ramoutar (3-52) was the top bowlers for T&T.
West Indies senior team manager, Omar Khan was on hand
at the playing venue and was quite impressed with the little he saw from
both teams.
"Both teams showed some fighting qualities, which is
good at this level of the game. However, there is still a tremendous
amount of work to be done at our under-19 level, if we are to produce
top quality players, who will move on to represent their senior teams
and West Indies," Khan said.
Final point standings: Barbados 37 pts, Guyana 34,
Trinidad and Tobago 30, Windwards 28, Jamaica 26, Leewards 19.
