TCL Youth Challenge

Barath heads list of U-19s trialists
April 14th 2008

T&T and West Indies youth opening batsman Adrian Barath heads the list of 28 players invited by the National youth selectors to prepare for the TCL Youth Challenge in July/August in Barbados.

The right-handed Barath is one of five players retained by Chief Selector Lalman Kowlessar from the team that participated in last year’s tournament in St Kitts and Nevis.

Barath participated in the ICC Youth World Cup in Malaysia with moderate success earlier this year. He is widely tipped to captain the Under-19 team in Barbados.

Among the players retained from last year’s tournament are fast bowler Brent Cameron, allrounders Kjorn Ottley and Alden Daniel, along with off-spinner Vaaroon Samaroo.

Listed among the newcomers are the tallscoring Evin Lewis and T&T Under-17 captain Yannick Cariah.

Lewis has scored over 700 runs in this year’s Secondary Schools League and the T&T Cricket Board’s Super League tournaments, included three back-to-back centuries for Princes Town Senior Comprehensive in the school’s series.

Cariah has been a model of consistency for El Dorado Secondary in the colleges league.

Also included among the trialists is the impressive allrounder Kareem Jumadeen, son of former T&T and West Indies left-arm spinner Raphick Jumadeen.

The team will be managed by executive member of the local board William Wallace, who has replaced former T&T youth allrounder Narsingh Rambaran, while former T&T and West Indies left-handed batsman Larry Gomes is expected to land the coaching assignment once more.

Gomes performed the duties in St Kitts and Nevis and was also coach of the West Indies youth team in Malaysia.

Kowlessar said out of the lot selected several talented players will emerge including pacers Brent Cameron and Sheldon Dugan, along with left-arm unorthodox spinners Javin Ramdhanie and Javed Boodram.

“This is the best 28 U-19 players we have in the country at present. They should give a good account of themselves in the TCL Challenge,” Kowlessar said.

SQUAD: Yannick Cariah, Stefon Kallie, Marc Panchu, Evin Lewis, Akiel Cooper, Amando Patterson, Brent Cameron, Ako George, Donnel Hercules, Kareem Jumadeen, Ravi Khan, Kjorn Ottley, Omesh Ramoutar, Nashwan Latchman, Javed Boodram, Shivon Sankar, Isaac Nicholas, Sheldon Dugan, Andrew Hospedales, Vicki Oudit, Hakim Mitchell, Alden Daniel, Vaaroon Samaroo, Terrence Ramsaroop, Adrian Barath, Sebastien Bhal, Javid Ramdhanie, Nicholas Rampersad.
