| TTCB – Results TT/Jamaica Day
Two Match Report and Scoreboard T&T's under-19 opening batsman, Evin Lewis struck a hard-fought unbeaten century but his team were still facing an uphill task to overhaul Jamaica's challenging first innings total on the second day in Round One of the TCL Group Regional Cricket Challenge at Banks Brewery, yesterday. The 2008 PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League " Cricketer of the Year" hit a workmanlike 112 as T&T chasing Jamaica's formidable first innings total of 328 for nine declared, were battling on 189 for six. They still need a further 140 runs for first innings lead, with four wickets intact. Omesh Ramoutar is the other not out batsman with eight. Left-arm spinner Patrick Harty is the top bowler for Jamaica with three for 44 from 21.3 overs. He received good support from right-arm leg-spinner Jermaine Blackwood with two for 39 from 23 overs. Lewis, a student of Princes Town Secondary School single handedly took the fight against the opposition's bowling attack, as none of the other batsmen looked the part and succumbed to soft dismissals. The left-handed batsman in his debut match at this level, warmed the hearts of the many spectators with his courageous and determined batting. The 17-year-old resident of Rio Claro in South-East Trinidad, achieved his feat with a boundary off Harty. The landmark came in 272 minutes off 229 balls and was fashioned with 10 fours and one six. Earlier, Jamaica resumed on their bedtime position of 294 for seven, and added a further 34 runs before the declaration came at the fall of the ninth wicket. Overnight batsman Maverick Perry went on to register his first half-century at this level, before he was eventually dismissed for 73, compiled in 247 minutes and 175 balls with four fours. Pacer Sheldon Dogan (3-59) and left-arm unorthodox spinner Javed Boodram (3-86) were the top wickettakers for T&T. Left with 11 overs batting before lunch, T&T made a poor start in pursuit of their target with the dismissal of skipper Adrian Barath with only 12 runs on the board. The West Indies youth opening batsman played an injudicious shot and was caught at the backward square-leg boundary by Harty off Romeo Dunka's bowling for five. T&T went to the interval on 30 for one. On the resumption, Lewis in tandem with Kjorn Ottley took the fight against the Jamaicans with intelligent batting and running. However, after the duo had added 61 in 90 minutes for the second wicket, the partnership was broken when Ottley was caught by Horace Miller off Harty for 27. Middle-order batsmen, Yannick Cariah (13), Akeil Cooper (1) and Ako George (0) were all dismissed with poor shot selections, as T&T slipped from 107 for two to 112 for five at tea. After the break, Lewis figured in two important partnership as he fought gallantly to keep his team alive in the contest. He added 47 for the sixth wicket with Aaron Alfred (7) and 30 in an unbroken seventh wicket stand Ramoutar. T&T's manager William Wallace was full of praise of Lewis' batting and said that the other batsmen should take example of his determination. " It was a solid batting display by Lewis (Evin). He showed gut and determination, the other batsmen should take note. But this is the opening match of the series and there is always room for improvement," Wallace stated.
