TTCB – Results TCL Group West Indies U-19 Challenge Second Day Match Report and Scoreboard PROMISING T&T youth allrounder Yannick Cariah bagged his second five-wicket haul of the series, which helped his team to earn first innings points against the Windward Islands, on the second day of the penultimate round of the TCL Group West Indies U-19 Challenge at the Combermere High School ground, yesterday. Chasing T&T's competitive total of 301 for eight declared, the Windwards were dismissed for 250. Cariah grabbed five wickets for 95 runs from 27 overs, and was well supported by first innings century maker Kjorn Ottley who picked up two for 47 from 18.2 overs. With a vital 51-run-lead, T&T left with 23 overs batting in the day's play, closed on 78 for one , an overall lead of 129 runs with nine wickets remaining. Skipper Adrian Barath made a brisk 35 with seven fours, while fellow opener Evin Lewis is unbeaten on 34 and Akiel Cooper six. Earlier, T&T declared at their bedtime position of 301 for eight. The Windwards made an unimpressive start in pursuit of the opposition's challenging first innings total. They lost the wicket of opening batsman Wayne Harper (5) caught at first slip by Barath off Hakeem Mitchell with the total on 11. Dennis Louis (24) was joined by Kaveem Hodge and carried the score to 50 before the former was well caught at short-leg by Marc Panchu off Cariah's bowling. Junior Javier (17) and the impressive Hodge pushed the the score before the Javier was snapped up by close-in substitute fieldsman Ako George shortly before the lunch break. At the interval, the Windwards were 91 for three, and on the resumption, they slumped to 97 for seven, with Hodge (43), Marvin Small (0), Dennis Smith (0) and skipper Kerron Cottoy (0) all failing to negotiate the probing spin of Cariah and Ottley. However, the talented Dalton Polius found a useful partner in Oscar George and the duo featured in a face-saving eight wicket partnership of 84 in 70 minutes, that took the sting of the T&T's bowling attack, which was depleted by the absence of left-arm spinner Javed Boodram, who spent the entire day at the team's hotel, suffering with a stomach 'bug'. The partnership was broken at 181 when George was brilliantly caught at cover by Mitchell off Cariah's bowling for 36. Polius was joined at the wicket by West Indies youth fast bowler Delorn Johnson and pushed the score merrily along to 208 before Polius was caught by Barath at first slip for 57. He batted for 123 minutes and 89 balls and struck three fours. Towards the end of the innings, Johnson and Audie Alexander added an important 42 for last wicket. Johnson struck a swashbuckling unbeaten 43 in 43 minutes off 39 balls with one four and four sixes, to prolong the agony of the T&T team. The Windwards were finally dismissed for 250 when Alexander was run out for 10. Meanwhile, T&T's vice-captain Ottley who scored his first century at this level in his second and final year in the regional U-19 series was elated at his performance. " It is a great achievement to score a century at regional level, and it is a sign of better things to come," Ottley told G-Sports yesterday. The 18-year-old Presentation College Chaguanas student, who is the holder of eight CXC subjects said that he is not to please with the team's showing in this year's tournament. " I am not pleased with the side's overall showing in the series. However, we are now starting to play as a team, and I believe we have a good chance of lifting the One-day trophy," said Ottley, who has tallied 198 runs in four innings in the competition.
