T&T vs Jamaica Day Three
January 19th 2009

Kelly brightens dull day for T&T

A late afternoon burst of three wickets by medium pacer Richard Kelly gave T&T an opportunity to push for first innings points, despite rain which wrecked the penultimate day play.

Kelly stole the spotlight late in the afternoon in the West Indies Cricket Board Four-day match against Jamaica, on Sunday at the Queen’s Park Oval.

Kelly’s effort was good enough to keep T&T in contention for first innings lead, after Jamaica had dominated the proceedings in the contest so far. Chasing the home team first innings meagre first innings total of 202, defending champions Jamaica were going along their merry way at 136 for two, until the introduction of Kelly.

The right-arm bowler bagged three wickets for nine runs from 17 deliveries , as the visitors slipped to 148 for five, still needing a further 55 runs with five wickets intact for the all important first innings points.

The burly Kelly accounted for opposition’s skipper Tamar Lambert (11), caught by wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed to leave the Jamaica on 136 for three. Ten runs later he picked up the scalp of Donavan Pagon (41) by the same route, and just before the close, he shattered the stumps of night watchman Andre Russell (2) to leave the Jamaicans on the backfoot on 148 for five. Kelly ended with figures of three for 34 from 9.5 overs.

Former West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds is the not out batsman on six. Opening batsman Brenton Parchment with a gritty 54 is the leading scorer for Jamaica. He batted for 139 minutes, faced 121 balls and struck six fours and a six.

He shared in an opening partnership of 64 off 153 balls with Danza Hyatt who made 24. Other good contribution came from Pagon who hit five fours in his knock which spanned 120 minutes and 116 balls.

Earlier, T&T resumed under heavy overcast conditions at 9.30 am, on 189 for seven and were dismissed for 2002.

Left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed (0 was bowled by leg-spinner Gavin Wallace with the first ball of the day’s play.

Off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth (6) averted the hattrick but did not last long as he was bowled all over the shop by probing leg-spinner Odean Brown, leaving Kelly unbeaten on 25 made in 69 minutes and which included two sixes.

Injured T&T allrounder Rayad Emrit did not bat.

Brown was the leading wicket taker for Jamaica with four for 61 off 24.5 overs, and received good support from Wallace with two for 33 and former West Indies allrounder Dave Bernard two for 50.

Jamaica started their reply before the lunch interval and took the score to 74 for one at the break, with Parchment on 42 and Pagon five. They had lost the wicket of Hyatt (24) caught at long-on by Darren Bravo off Sherwin Ganga’s bowling.

There were persistent showers during the lunch interval and play eventually got going at 1.55 pm.

But with the score on 90, Parchment was caught at cover of Mohammed’s (D) bowling, giving the T&T team a glimmer of hope in the contest. However, at the tea interval 2.40 pm, rain came again, and play got re-started at 4.20 pm.

And to add insult to the miseries, the water-hog (machine which removes water), malfunctioned and the removal of the water on the tarpaulin covers had to be done manually.

An interesting morning is expected, weather permitting with play today scheduled to start at 9.30 am.

Day Two T&T vs Jamaica
January 19th 2009

The un-seasonal weather pattern which is plaguing the Caribbean region at present, continued on Saturday at the Queen’s Park Oval, severely disrupting the crucial second round contest in the West Indies Cricket Board Four-Day competition, between defending champions Jamaica and title-chasing T&T.

Only 15.2 overs and 61 minutes play was possible in the second day’s play, during which T&T resumed on 145 four and reached 189 for seven, when rain stopped play for the remainder of the day at 11.25 am.

The home team added 45 runs under gloomy and overcast conditions for the loss of three wickets, to leave the game evenly poised for first innings lead with two days remaining in the rain-ruined contest.

Allrounder Richard Kelly with two huge sixes in his 18 is the not out batsman, while leg-spinner Odean Brown with three for 53 and medium-pacer Dave Bernard Jr two for 50, the top bowlers for the early leaders in the seven-team tournament.

Earlier, T&T resumed from their bedtime position with left-handed Darren Bravo on 15 and Sherwin Ganga four.

The duo pushed the score to 151 before probing leg-spinner Brown picked up two wickets in successive balls to tilt the balance in the Jamaicans favour.

Brown had Ganga (S) caught at silly-on by Danza Hyatt for seven and with the very next ball had Gibran Mohammed caught by wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert for no score.

There was a break for rain at 10.12 am with T&T on 172 for six, and Bravo on 33 and Kelly three.

Play re-started at 11.10 am, and the left-handed Kelly was quickly into stride with two sixes over long-on off Brown in the second over after the rain break.

However, with the pair looking in a dominant mood, Bravo was adjudged leg-before wicket to leg-spinner Gavin Wallace for 35, to send T&T on the ropes on 189 for seven. Bravo batted for 101 minutes, faced 79 balls and struck two fours. Rain came immediately after Bravo’s dismissal sending the players into the dressing rooms for the remainder of the day.

Play was officially called off at 4.20 pm., by umpires Khemraj Barrasingha and Goland Greaves.

And with the rain playing havoc, T&T suffered another crucial blow in their quest for top honours as West Indies allrounder Rayad Emrit suffered a broken left-arm while batting in the Indoor Nets at the Oval during the rain break on Friday.

Emrit was rushed to the nearby St Clair Medical Centre and attended to by Dr Terry Ali.

Dr Ali said that Emrit will be out of action for six weeks giving the injury the necessary time to mend.

Emrit joins West Indies allrounder Darren Bravo and fast bowler Ravi Rampaul on the injured list.

Manager of the T&T team, Colin Borde said that Emrit’s injury is a big blow to the entire squad.

“Rayad’s (Emrit) experience as well as ability will be sorely missed. It is really unfortunate for him as he has worked extremely hard over the six months, he is a strong character and will bounce back well,” Borde told the Trinidad Guardian. Speaking about the inclement weather in the region, Borde said the rain is God’s work and they cannot do much about it.

He said that with the little time left in the game, the T&T team still has to put their best foot forward.

Meanwhile, discarded West Indies left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed is looking forward to represent the region again during the forthcoming tour to the Caribbean by England.

The 29-year-old Mohammed has played in five Test matches during his career and has captured 13 wickets.

Mohammed last represented the West Indies in a triangular tournament last year in Toronto, which also featured Canada and Bermuda.

He has set a goal of taking between 40-45 wickets this season. Mohammed was the leading wicket taker in the region in 2006 taking 42 wickets.

“ I am feeling 100 per-cent fit. I want to help T&T win the four-day regional tournament, and also cement a place on the West Indies team,” Mohammed told the Trinidad Guardian.

Play starts at 9.30 am on Sunday.

Day One T&T vs Jamaica
January 19th 2009

Ganga, Guillen battle on rain hit day

T&T cricketers led by a defiant half-century from skipper Daren Ganga, crawled to 145 for four on a rain-affected opening day’s play against Jamaica, in the second round of the West Indies Cricket Board Four-Day competition, on Friday, at the Queen’s Park Oval.

There were two interruptions in the day’s play during which 24 overs were lost.

When umpires Khemraj Barrasingha and Goland Greaves offered light to the batsmen in semi-darkness at 5.45 pm, left-handers Darren Bravo was not out on 15 and Sherwin Ganga unbeaten on four.

Team bowler Dave Bernard Jr was the main wicket-taker for Jamaicans with two for 38 from 16 overs. There was a wicket a piece for pacer Andre Russell (1-20) and leg-spinner Odean Brown (1-29).

On a pitch that had a tinge of green and with the opposition bowlers extracting considerable bounce and lateral movement, the T&T batsmen were determined to stay and play only at the loose deliveries, with Ganga (D) leading from the front.

Ganga was the fourth batsman to be dismissed for a disciplined 57 made in 209 minutes from 153 balls with seven fours.

His unfortunate dismissal came after he was bowled by Bernard, he tried to leave alone a delivery, which nipped back sharply, taking an inside edge onto his stumps.

Ganga (D) shared in an important second wicket partnership of 106 in 163 minutes with the impressive left-handed opening batsman Justin Guillen who contributed a solid 48.

Earlier, the teams played with unchanged line-ups from their opening round matches.

Jamaica’s skipper Tamar Lambert won the toss and asked the hosts to take first strike, a move that paid rich dividends as early in the second over, when former West Indies youth opening batsman, Adrian Barath (0), was beaten for pace and swing by Andre Russell and edged straight into the gloves of wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert. It was Russell’s fourth delivery in his first over of the match.

Ganga (D) joined Guillen and the two began to repair the early damage with resolute batting. The duo carried to total to 58 for one at the lunch interval with Ganga (D) on 29 and Guillen 23.

After the break, the pair resumed in gloomy and overcast conditions and at 1.15 pm, with the T&T total on 92 for one, rain forced the players off the field.

Play re-started at 1.55 pm, and Ganga (D) brought up his fifty with a single off Russell through backward point.

The landmark came in 156 minutes and 120 balls and included seven fours.

Shortly after, Guillen’s hard-fought innings came to an end, when he nibbled at a delivery from Bernard and skipper Lambert gleefully accepted the offer at first slip.

Guillen batted for 171 minutes, faced 116 balls and struck five fours and a six off Brown over the long-on fence.

The second interruption came at 2.30 pm, with T&T on 110 for two with Ganga (D) on 55 and out-of-favour West Indies batsman Lendl Simmons yet to score.

After the lengthy interruption, play got going again at 4.45 pm, only to see the demise of Simmons (13) given out leg before to Brown offering no stroke to leave T&T in a spot of bother on 123 for three.

T&T slipped further in trouble with the dismissal of Ganga with the score unchanged.

However, Bravo and Ganga (S) saw them safely through in fading light.

“ I am feeling 100 per-cent fit. I want to help T&T win the four-day regional tournament, and also cement a place on the West Indies team,” Mohammed told the Trinidad Guardian.

Play starts at 9.30 am, weather permitting.
