| TTCB – Results CARIB TWENTY20
SHIELD Tadpole stars as PowerGen leaps to Carib title The tiny sleepy district of Syne Village in Penal, came alive on Saturday night with the sound of tassa drums and music, accompanied with a cheque of $100,000 and the coveted Carib Twenty20 Shield. The celebrations which went into the wee hours of yesterday morning, were in honour of PowerGen Sports Club, which defeated W Connection Wanderers in the grand finale by 49 runs in a lop-sided affair on Saturday under lights at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. In front of one of the biggest crowds in domestic cricket at the Caribbean’s major Test venue, the PowerGen team gave a superb performance to deny the opposition from Central Trinidad. It was PowerGen’s second lien on the Carib Shield having won it in the in-augural year in 2002. Set a relatively gettable target of 132 for victory, Wanderers, flattered to deceive and were bowled out for 82 in 18.1 overs. Leading the victory charge for the ‘Electricity Boys’ was T&T and West Indies left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed who bagged four wickets for eight runs from three overs, to destroy the Wanderers’ middle-order and lower-order batting. For his tremendous bowling performance, Mohammed copped the ‘Man of the Match’ award. Only Barbadian allrounder Kenroy Williams with 32 off 36 balls, which included three fours offered resistance to the potent pace and spin bowling attack employed by PowerGen’s skipper Samuel Badree. Earlier, Wanderers won the toss and inserted the PowerGen team. The move seemingly back-fired early in the contest as after two overs, the opening pair of Evin Lewis (19) and Nicholas Sookdeosingh (21) added 22 runs, but after Lewis’ dismissal with the total on 21, there was a constant trek to and from the pavilion for the PowerGen batsmen. However, Rondell Ramlochan with an unbeaten 34 from 24 balls with a six and a four propped up the PowerGen’s innings, as they reached 131 for nine from the allotted 20 overs. Out-of-favour T&T leg-spinner Sanjiv Gooljar was the leading bowler for Wanderers with three for 23. Ramlochan won the ‘Best Batsman’ award. Captain Badree was elated at his team’s victory and praised the younger players for their tremendous effort during the series. “ We played without four key players in the tournament because of regional duty. However, kudos must be given to the younger players who seized the opportunity to show their worth at this level. They did it admirably,” Badree said. Meanwhile, acting chairman of the local organizing committee Richard Ramkissoon said that there were 1400 paying patrons in the final which attracted about 3000 spectators, while 1200 paid to see the semi-finals on Wednesday.
