| TTCB – Results WICB 4-Day
Championship Persistent rain and drizzles seriously affected the opening day’s play in the West Indies Cricket Board 12th round match,of the four-day competition between hosts T&T and Guyana, here on Friday at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. At the close of a rain-ruined day’s play, Guyana were battling on 129 for three, with Sewnarine Chattergoon on 52 not out and skipper Travis Dowlin on 14.1 There were a wicket apiece for pacers Atiba Allert (1-28) and Navin Stewart (1-29). A total of 52 overs were bowled and play will start today at 9.30 am, weather permitting. There were two stoppages for rain at 11.24 am and 2.28 pm before play was eventually called off at 5. 28 pm by umpires Terrence Birbal and Lennox Abraham. The match between the teams is of academic interest with neither side having a chance for championship honours. T&T are fifth in the seven-team standings, while Guyana are at the bottom of ladder. Earlier, Guyana won the toss and chose to bat. They left-out Royston Crandon and Esaun Crandon from their final eleven. T&T omitted left-arm spinner Magnum Nanan and batsman Daron Cruikshank from the squad of 13. Cellar-placed Guyana got off to a positive start with openers Chattergoon and Christopher Barnwell posting 55 for the first wicket before they were separated, when the latter was caught by Jason Mohammed at extra-cover off the bowling of Atiba Allert for 30, which comprised of six fours from 35 balls. Out-of-favour West Indies batsman Leon Johnson joined Chattergoon and carried the score to 62 for one before rain interrupted play at 11.24 am. Chattergoon was on 29 and Johnson yet to score. An early lunch was taken and on the resumption the duo pushed the score to 88 before Johnson (13) perished, brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed from the bowling off pacer Navin Stewart. It was Stewart’s maiden First-Class wicket in his debut match for T&T. Stewart previously appeared in two Twenty20 matches for T&T in the Stanford Tournament in Antigua. The in-form and discarded West Indies left-handed batsman Narsingh Deonarine joined Chattergoon and with the threat of rain imminent, Deonarine was involved in a terrible mix-up with his partner and was run out for 13 and the Guyanese were reduced to 104 for three. Despite his unfortunate run-out, Deonarine found the time to push his tally of runs in the series to 875. Upon Deonarine’s dismissal, rain sent the players scampering off the field at 2.28 pm and early tea was taken with Guyana 104 for three. Chattergoon was unbeaten on 42 and skipper Travis Dowlin nought. After the rain break, play re-started at 4.45 pm and Chattergoon and Dowlin battled bravely in semi-darkness. In between, Chattergoon reached his fifty with three runs to third man from the bowling of off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth. The landmark came in 233 minutes off 156 balls with two fours and a six. Meanwhile, returning T&T allrounder Rayad Emrit said that his injured left-arm is between 90-95 per-cent better and it is completely pain free. Emrit returned to the T&T team after an absence of nine weeks because of a broken left-hand which he sustained at the Queen’s Park Indoor Facility during the second round game against Jamaica. “ The most important thing at the moment is confidence and by being selected for this game, all the nervous tensions have disappeared. My main objective in these last few games is to give a good account of myself with both the bat and ball and help T&T to finish in second position,” Emrit said. He added that at present he is being sought by several clubs in the English Minor Leagues and will give an answer on Monday or Tuesday. Deonarine said that he is quite pleased with his present form and is looking to catch the eyes of the regional selectors with his sights set on the summer tour of England. “ I want to play the game at the highest level and cement a permanent place on the West Indies team. I am looking to finish the four-day competition with more than a thousand runs, to regain the confidence of the West Indies selectors once more,” said the 25-year-old Deonarine who has appeared in four Test and five ODIs for the West Indies. SCOREBOARD T&T v GUYANA Promising allrounder Imran Khan snared a five-wicket-haul to help dismiss Guyana for a competitive 282 in rain-affected day’s play which kept T&T in contention against their cellar placed opponents in the 12th round of the West Indies Cricket Board four-day match at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. The unseasonal weather pattern which is plaguing the twin island Republic of T&T during the past month, continued yesterday, seriously affecting the second day’s play. At the end of a rain-extended day’s play, T&T in pursuit of Guyana’s first innings total, closed on 53 for one. Adrian Barath is not out on 29 and skipper Daren Ganga 7. The batsman dismissed was Khan who was caught at forward short-leg by Leon Johnson off Christopher Barnwell’s bowling for seven. Khan ended with five wickets for 42 from 10.2 overs. It was his second five-wicket-haul for the series to follow his five for 33 against the Leeward Islands at the Sir Frank Worrell Grounds at the University of the West Indies in St Augustine. He received good support from debutant pacer Navin Stewart who bagged two for 74 from 18 overs. The affable Khan has now pushed his tally of wickets for the regional season to 25. Earlier, Guyana resumed at 9.30 am on their bedtime position of 129 for three, with West Indies left-handed batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon on 52 and skipper Travis Dowlin 14. The experienced pair batting in overcast and gloomy conditions played cautiously against the T&T bowling attack, taking no chances against medium-pacers – Rayad Emrit, Atiba Allert and Stewart. However, the breakthrough came at 173, when the patient Chattergoon was well caught by wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed off Emrit’s bowling for a disciplined 68. Chattergoon’s innings lasted 332 minutes and 213 balls and included six fours and a six. Former West Indies youth middle-order batsman Assad Fudadin joined his captain and without facing a ball, rain intervened at 11.10 am sending the players scampering to the pavilion. An early lunch was taken and play got re-started at 1.22 pm, with the T&T bowling attack, posing no problems to Dowlin and Fudadin. But with the introduction of right-arm leg-spinner Khan, the visitors lost the important wicket of Dowlin, who was caught by Allert at mid-on with the bowler’s first delivery for 42 as Guyana slipped to 184 for five. Dowlin batted for 171 minutes, faced 127 balls and struck three fours. Former Guyana and West Indies youth captain Steven Jacobs then partnered Fudadin and the pair found run-scoring very difficult against a rejuvenated T&T team. Khan who has emerged as the team’s leading allrounder in the series along with Sherwin Ganga, grabbed another vital wicket when he had Fudadin brilliantly stumped by Mohammed (G) for 22 to send the Guyanese on the ropes on 217 for six. Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian joined Jacobs and added 30 important runs before Christian departed, caught at square-leg by Ganga (S) off Stewart’s bowling for 11. Guyana plunged further into trouble on 251 for eight, when Devindra Bishoo was caught at first slip by Amit Jaggernauth off Khan for no score. In between Jacobs reached his fifty with a single of Ganga (S). The landmark came in 61 minutes off 62 balls with six fours and a six. He found a useful partner in Veerasammy Permaul and together they frustrated the T&T bowling attack, with responsible batting and sensible running. The Guyanese innings eventually folded for 282, with the final two wickets – Jacobs (54) and Brendon Bess (0) falling to Khan with successive deliveries in the bowler’s 11th over. Play will start at 9.30 am, weather permitting. SCOREBOARD At Queen’s Park Oval T&T’s skipper Daren Ganga fashioned a stylish half-century but surrended first innings lead to Guyana, on the third day’s play in the 12th round of the West Indies Cricket Board four-day championship yesterday, at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. Chasing Guyana’s modest first innings total of 282, the right-handed Ganga made much of the inclement weather, which has severely affected the four-day encounter with no fewer than five and a half hours being lost through rain. However, the middle and lower-order batting failed to click and T&T crashed out for 259, 23 runs shy of Guyana’s total. Guyana left with two overs batting were nought withoutloss. In another rain-ruined day’s play, Ganga lashed 92 and received good support from opener Adrian Barath with 38 and Sherwin Ganga 36. T&T’s batting were undermined by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul who bagged four for 54 and right-arm leg-spinner Devindra Bishoo who picked up three for 48. Earlier, T&T resumed on their overnight position on 53 for one with former West Indies youth batsman Barath on 29 and skipper Ganga seven. The pint-sized Barath was first to be dismissed with the total on 71, caught at second slip by Christopher Barnwell from the bowling of Brendon Bess for 38. The right-handed Barath struck six fours of 75 balls during his innings. The in-form Darren Bravo joined his Ganga and added an important 63 for the third wicket before Bravo perished caught at point by Sewnarine Chattergoon of Permaul for 27. T&T went to the lunch break on 143 for three, with Ganga on 49 and Jason Mohammed six. On the resumption, T&T lost the vital wicket of Jason Mohammed, caught at long-on by former West Indies youth middle-order batsman Asad Fudadin off Permaul for 13, as the home-team slipped to 159 for four. Sherwin Ganga partnered his elder brother and despite several stoppages for rain in the post lunch and tea period, the duo held their nerves and figured in a useful 73-run fifth wicket partnership. However, they were separated with the total on 232, when Ganga (S) was snapped up by close in fieldsman Steven Jacob off Permaul for a well played 236. And shortly after Ganga (D) who looked well set to register his 21st First-Class century holed out to Bess at long-off from Permaul’s bowling for 92. Ganga batted for 316 minutes, faced 262 balls and struck eight fours and three sixes. The remaining batsmen failed to offer resistance to the probing spin attack employed by skipper Travis Dowlin and nearing the end, right-arm leg-spinner Devindra Bishoo chipped in with the wickets of Gibran Mohammed (5) , Rayad Emrit (4) and debutant Navin Stewart (5) as T&T innings folded much to the disappointment of the few spectators at the Test venue. Play starts at 10 am. SCOREBOARD T&T v GUYANA |
