CLICO WEST INDIES UNDER-15 CHAMPIONSHIP

Jamaica retains youth title

Title-holding Jamaica successfully defended its Clico West Indies U-15 championship crown, when it defeated the Windward Islands by seven wickets, in the final round of competition yesterday, at the Sir Frank Worrell Grounds at the University of the West Indies in St Augustine.

The young Jamaicans ended the series on eight points, the same as hosts T&T but copped the prestigious title, after it defeated T&T in the opening round of the tournament.

The Jamaicans led by a solid bowling effort from John Campbell (4-17) and Brian Gayle (2-9) dismissed the Windwards for a paltry 94 off 47 overs. In response, the impressive Oshane Walters hit a blistering unbeaten 55 off 46 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes to lead the champions to victory in 12.3 overs.

At the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, T&T defeated Barbados by five wickets.

Taking first strike, the young Barbadians were bowled out for 138 in 42.4 overs. Justin Greaves top-scored with 34, while Jameel Stewart contributed 27. Left-arm spinner Nairon Motilal was the pick of the local team bowlers with the decent figures of four for 16, while there were two wickets apiece for Anthony Simmons (2-29) and Adrian Cooper (2-41).

T&T in reply, romped home to victory in 33 overs, with Stefan Wharwood hitting a patient 63 off 88 balls with two fours and a five.

At the St Mary’s College grounds in St Clair, Guyana crushed the Leeward Islands by eight wickets. Led by (3-17) from Mark Tyrell, the Leewards were prized out for a measly 84 in 25.5 overs. Guyana led by a brisk 27 from Brian Sattaur rushed to victory in 19.5 overs.

Final points standings: Jamaica 8 pts, T&T 8, Guyana 6, Barbados 5, Windwards 2, Leewards 1.

AT UWI: BARBADOS 217 for four off 50 overs (Shai Hope 70, Jameel Stuart 56 not out, Justin Greaves 32) v JAMAICA 162 all out off 30 overs (Delbert Gayle 49, John Campbell 35, James McDonald 25, Chaim Holder 2-22, Derroll Harewood 2-54). Barbados won by 55 runs.

AT UWI: WINDWARD ISLANDS 94 off 47 overs (John Campbell 4-17, Brian Gayle 2-9) v JAMAICA 95 for three off 12.3 overs (Oshane Walters 55 not out). Jamaica won by 7 wkts.
