BG TT UNDER-19 TOURNAMENT
April 17th 2009

Katwaroo guides South to youth final

Former T&T and West Indies U-15 captain Steven Katwaroo scored 66 runs for South, who defeated North by 54 runs and earned themselves a place in the final of the BGTT Under-19 competition.

In yesterday’s semifinal encounter at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, Katwaroo faced 72 balls and his innings included four fours as South were restricted to 217 for eight in the allotted 50 overs.

Katwaroo received good support from Kyron Benny who made a solid 58 off 71 balls with five fours.

Top bowlers for North were Stefan Gafoor (2-40) and Akiel Hosein (2-47) with two wickets apiece.

In response, North managed by well-known sports administrator, Paul Clarke, made a valiant attempt to reach their target but were thwarted by South’s left-arm spin twins - Mitra Kisraj (3-38) and Randy Narine (2-28) and reached 163 for nine from their allottment of 50 overs.

Only Shabazz Jackman with an unbeaten 29 and Christian Hererra 26 offered resistance to the potent Southerners bowling attack, who were up to the task entrusted to them by head of the technical staff Sheldon Boochoon.

South will meet defending champions East in the final carded for April 27 at the National Cricket Centre, starting at 10 am.
