Two in two for Cooper’s X1

An Akiel Cooper led-team, completed their second win on the trot, when they defeated Cariah’s X1 by three wickets in Round Two of the T&T Cricket Board/BGTT quadrangular series at the Greig Street Recreation Ground in Balmain, Couva, yesterday.

The tournament has been organised by the local board in conjunction with BGTT to prepare the national team for the upcoming TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge in Jamaica in July/August.

Taking first strike, the Cariah X1 were skittled out for a paltry 99 in 37.2 overs, with none of their batsmen going past 20 runs.

Promising off-spinner Shaheed Mohammed (3-11) and left-arm medium-pacer Stephen Sooklal (3-21) were the leading bowlers for the Cooper X1. Lending good support were spinner Sachin Boodram (2-15) and Kyle Borneo (2-14) with two wickets apiece.

In response, Cooper’s X1 laboured to victory in 31.5 overs, scoring 103 for the loss of seven wickets. Teshawn Castro led the way with 23, while medium-pacer Marcelle Jones was quite impressive with four for 33, and skipper Yannic Cariah bagged two for 25 for the losing team.

In the other game of the series yesterday, Ottley X1 registered their first victory of the tourney, when they scored a 21-run win against the Alexis X1 at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva.

Ottley X1 took first strike and were dismissed for 195 in the final of the allotted 50 overs. Amir Khan (50) and skipper Yannick Ottley (41) were the notable run-getters.

Former West Indies U-15 left-spinner Derone Davis (3-26) and Qadir Shah (3-42) were the top bowlers for the Alexis X1.

Alexis X1 in reply, folded for 175, with Savion Lara hitting a fluent 40. Anil Harripersad with three for 29 was the leading wickettaker for the winning team.

In the opening round of the series which was played on Tuesday, Cooper X1 whipped the Nicholas Alexis led team by 65 runs , while Cariah X1 defeated the Ottley by 44 runs.

The final round of the tournanment will take place on May 1 at the NCC and the Greig Street Recreation Ground in Balmain.
