POWERGEN SECONDARY SCHOOLS CRICKET LEAGUE
April 24th 2009

‘El Do’ wins first national championship title

Impressive T&T U-19 allrounder Yannic Cariah hit a blistering 84 to lead El Dorado Secondary Comprehensive to a thrilling 23-run victory against Hillview College, in the final of the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League Championship Division, yesterday, at UWI grounds in St Augustine. It was ‘El Do’ first ever national championship division title since their participation in the league’s competitions for the past 30 years.

Batting first, before a large contingent of supporters from both teams, ‘El Do’ piled up a competitive 235 for seven from their allotment of 45 overs. Cariah struck nine glorious boundaries in his stroke-filled innings and received admirable support from Kern Matheson (45 not out - six fours) and Travis Karim (45 - five fours).

Leading bowlers for Hillview were Stefan Gafoor (3-50) and Isaiah Rajah (2-14).

In response, the Hillview batsmen gave a plucky display in an effort to reach their target but were outdone by intelligent bowling, which was aided by some brilliant fielding.

They were eventually restricted to 212 for eight, with good scores coming from Anthony Jawahir (45- four fours, one five), Dion Smith (40- two fours - retired hurt) and Duane Cockburn (25).

Cariah supplemented his excellent batting with bowling figures of two for 63 to capture the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
