UNION PREMIER DIVISION PowerGen goes for outright win Leaders PowerGen Sports will be aiming for full points when they take on bottom of the standings, Moosai’s Sports in Round Six of the Eastern Credit Union Premier Division competition today at Honeymoon Park in Tacarigua. The ‘Electricity Boys’ with national allrounder Samuel Badree at the helm, leads the 10-team table with 69 points and are highly favoured to register an outright win against the lowly-rated Moosai Sports and stretched their lead further in the tournament. In other matches, second placed Tile Depot Central Sports will clash with defending champions Ceramic Merry Boys Sports at Presentation College grounds in Chaguanas. Central Sports led by former Guyana and West Indies right-arm leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo must win to stay in contention for top honours. Down South, FC Clarke Road will enjoy home advantage against W Connection Wanderers at Wilson Road in Penal, in a contest which can go either way. At Inshan Ali Park, Clico Preysal Sports will entertain Alescon Comets and will have a slight edge against the visitors. Mohammed hits hundred for PowerGen Title-chasing PowerGen Sports inched a little further for the coveted Eastern Credit Union Premier Division championship title, with another impressive performance against cellar-placed Moosai’s Sports on the opening day of Round Six matches, yesterday, at Honeymoon Park in Tunapuna. Led by a brilliant century from T&T middle-order batsman Jason Mohammed, the ‘Electricity Boys’ were in a strong position to eke out an outright win against their lowly-rated opponents. A former West Indies youth vice-captain, Mohammed stroked an elegant 144 to help leaders PowerGen post a massive 361 for eight declared. The right-handed batsman struck 22 fours and one six in 205 minutes off 152 deliveries and received good support from West Indies discarded left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed who made 50. In response, Moosai’s Sports were tottering on 142 for six. Down South, at Wilson Road in Penal, veteran off-spinner Mukesh Persad bagged eight for 64 for FC Clarke Road but could not prevent the visiting W Connection Wanderers from scoring a competitive 326. West Indies Twenty20 batsman William Perkins made 72. And at the Presentation College grounds in Chaguanas, the contest between defending champions, Ceramic Merry Boys and second-placed Tile Depot Central Sports was abandoned through rain after the former had reached 67 for two. At Munroe Road Recreation Ground in Cunupia, T&T and West Indies off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth captured four for 61 in his debut match for Queen’s Park against Munroe Road Sports. With support from former T&T and West Indies youth spinner Sunil Narine (5-48) helped dismissed the home team for 161 in 54 overs. In reply, the ‘Parkites’ were 113 for one, with skipper Justin Guillen unbeaten on 70. At Inshan Ali Park in Preysal, Guyanese national Vishal Singh hit 78 and skipper Imran Khan 57 as Alescon Comets were dismissed just before the close for 315 against Clico Preysal Sports. DAY TWO Heavy rain affected all of the Eastern Credit Union Premier Division championship Sixth Round matches ensuring no team was able to come away with an outright win yesterday. However, PowerGen Sports increased their chances of claiming the title, after taking first innings points from cellar-placed Moosai’s Sports in their match at Honeymoon Park,Tunapuna which was called off due to rain. Moosai resuming on 142 for six some 219 runs behind, were eventually bowled out for 172 and asked to follow on. Needing another 189 to make their opponents bat again Moosai reached 83 without loss before rain brought an end to the match. West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul claimed 4-47 in Moosai’s 1st innings. Powergen led by a century from national senior player Jason Mohammed amassed 361 for eight decleared in their first innings after deciding to bat. Mohammed scored 144 from 152 balls which included 22 fours and a six and he got valauble support from fellow T&T player, left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed who made 50. Over at Presentation College ground in Chaguanas defending champions Ceramic Merry Boys claimed first innings points from second position Title Depot Central Sports in a low scoring match. Merry Boys were bowled out for 110 in their first innings after play ended on Saturday due to rain with the score on 67-2, with Mario Belcon making 33 and Samuel felix adding 21. Gary Mathurin was the chief destroyer for Central taking 5-30, while Marlon Barath and Mahendra Nagamootoo each took two wickets. In reply Central were bundled out for 60 with only Nagamootoo putting up any resistance with 18. National seam bowler Richard Kelly led the demolition with 5-35 while Kyran Lynch took 3-18. Merry Boys in their second innings reached 54 with four of their bastmen already dismissed.
