TCL Group Regional Under-19 Cricket Challenge
Round 1 Day 2
July 10, 2009

Ottley’s ton puts T&T in charge

T&T’s skipper Yannick Ottley carved out a brilliant century to guide his team into a strong position against host Jamaica on the second day of Round One in the TCL Group Regional Under-19 Cricket Challenge yesterday at Kensington Park in Kingston.

The 18-year-old right-handed batsman hammered a stroked filled 126 as T&T piled up a mammoth 424 for seven declared. In response, the homesters were battling on 148 for four, still 276 runs behind with six wickets remaining.

Ottley, a student of Presentation College, Chaguanas and a key member of the Clico Preysal Sports team, which participates in the Premiership Division of the T&T Cricket Board’s competition,  struck 12 fours and three sixes and shared in an important fifth wicket partnership of 160 with FC Clarke Road United allrounder Akiel Cooper who contributed 66 with six fours and one six against the oppostion’s mediocre bowling attack.

Spinner Patrick Harty was the leading bowler for Jamaica with three for 101, while Romeo Dunka chipped in with two for 61.

Earlier, T&T resumed on its bedtime position of 305 for four, with Ottley on 65 and Cooper 23.

The pair batted sensibly scoring at will with a wide array shots on either side of the wicket, with Ottley in particular,  making most of the ordinary bowling.

He reached his maiden Under-19 century with an effortless cover-drive for four off Harty and celebrated his achievement with a couple sixes off leg-spinner Jermaine Blackwood in the following over.

He lost Cooper caught at the wicket by Harris off Harty’s bowling with the total on 403.
T&T went to the lunch interval on 412 for four and on the resumption, Ottley was trapped in front to Dunka for 126 and Sachin Boodram caught by Garth Garvey off Harty’s bowling for three, before the declaration was made.

Chasing T&T’s huge total, Jamaica made a poor start, when opener John Campbell was run out for no score with the total on three. Fellow opener Bryan Clarke was next to go caught and bowled by Javed Boodram for 27 with the score on 43.

The Jamaicans lost another wicket when Courtney Alleyne was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Rixon Maniram off Sachin Boodram for 11 as the home team slipped to 83 for three. In between, Paul Palmer who batted at number three was forced to retire hurt with his score on 31. Ramon Senior (32) and Garth Garvey (35 not out) added 51 for the fourth wicket before Senior was bowled by Ottley shortly before the close.

Manager of the T&T team, William Wallace told the Guardian that he is pleased with the team’s performance so far in the game and hope that they will continue in that same vein for the remainder of the series.

“ They have played well so far in this opening game. And I am certain they will continue to get better as the tournament goes along,” Wallace said.
