Regional Under-19 Cricket Challenge T&T holds the upper-hand against Bajans Title-chasing T&T made another fine start in their quest for top honours in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge, when they held the upper-hand against defending champions Barbados on the opening day of their crucial Round Three match, yesterday, at Up- Park Camp in Kingston. Led by a masterly bowling performance by allrounder Yannic Cariah, the young Bajans were bowled out for a modest 183 just after the tea interval. Left with 21 overs batting T&T closed on 37 without loss. Marc Panchu is not out on 15 and Nicholas Alexis unbeaten on 13. Cariah bagged four for 35 to take his tally of wickets in the series to 16 in just four innings. He received admirable support from skipper Yannick Ottley who grabbed two for five from nine overs and Sachin Boodram two for 29. Only Roston Chase (45), Kyle Myers (42) and Kraigg Brathwaite (41) offered resistence to the well-oiled and disciplined bowling attack. T&T who leads the six-team standings with maximum points after the first two round of matches carried their rich vein of form in this encounter with a disciplined display in the outfield. They had the young Bajans reeling under the potent spin and pace attack after the opposition won the toss and opted for first strike at the well kept venue at the Jamaica Defence Force. After Barbados won the toss and opted for first strike on a lively track, T&T made an early breakthrough with the score on 13, when Anthony Alleyne (8) was caught at forward short-leg by Ottley off the hostile Teshawn Castro. Shortly after, Dario Cummins (12) departed caught by Evin Lewis at slip off Cariah’s bowling. Barbados went to lunch at 91 for two, with Brathwaite on 41 and Chase 28. On the resumption, Brathwaite failed to add to his lunch time score trapped in front to Ottley and soon it was 99 for four, when Raymond Reifer (1) was caught by Akiel Cooper off Ottley’s bowling. The lower and middle-order failed to come to terms with the T&T attack and the innings folded thereafter. Earlier, T&T played an unchanged team to their winning combination, while Barbados brought in Brathwaite and Jermaine Marshall at the expense of Maradona Benn and Marquis Clarke. Manager of the T&T team, William Wallace was pleased with the team’s performance. “The team has been achieving our targets both from the batsmen and bowlers. Today was no exception with the bowlers, achieving the target of restricting the opposition for under 190,” Wallace said. The day’s play was witnessed by former West Indies left-arm spinner and current regional senior selector Raphick Jumadeen. He told the Trinidad Guardian that he is pleased of what he seen so far in the series. “ There are several players who have impressed me and if they are nurtured and harnessed properly, they can go on to better things,” Jumadeen said.
