Sir Garfield Sobers Schools International Tournament
July 21, 2009

T&T in Sir Garry Final

Trinidad and Tobago National Under 17 team will be aiming to complete the hat trick when they take on Combermere High School of Barbados in the Sir Garry Sobers Schools Cricket Festival at Kensington Oval today (Wednesday) in a day night fixture. Should T&T come out victorious in today’s final they would be the first team since 1993 to have achieved a hat trick of victories in this tournament.

In their semifinal encounter against Dominica T&T had little difficulty in getting past their opponents by ten wickets. Dominica, who T&T had beaten earlier in the preliminary rounds, batted first and were dismissed for a meager 80 runs. Doing the damage for T&T were Stephen Sooklal and Kiron Benny with three for 21 and three for 25 respectfully while Akeil Hosein picked up two wickets without conceding a run. T&T in reply needed just fifteen overs to get past the target with skipper Stephen Katwaroo and Anthony Jawahir unbeaten on 42 and 37 respectively.

Coach of T&T team Tarandath Sammy was confident that his team will come away with the title. “I feel confident that T&T will achieve the hat trick. The boys have been playing good cricket and they are eagerly looking forward to bringing home the title”, Sammy stated. Also confident of a T&T victory was manager Alec Burns who supported Sammy. “This team is indeed filled with very talented players and once they continue to play as they have been doing I am sure they will pull it off,” Burns said.

Before the start of the game both teams will have the pleasure of meeting cricketing legend Sir Garry Sobers.
