Sir Garfield Sobers Schools International Tournament
July 23, 2009

T&T Sir Garry Sobers Champions

Trinidad and Tobago National Under seventeen team turned in a remarkable performance to register a hat trick of victories in the Sir Garry Sobers cricket festival. The national team achieved the feat when they easily whipped Lester Vaughn High School by sixty nine runs in the day/night final at Kensington Oval, Barbados on Wednesday.

Paving the way for the T&T squad was skipper Steven Katwaroo who slammed an unbeaten century (111). T&T batted first and led by Katwaroo’s ton amassed 225 for five at the end of the allotted forty overs. Katwaroo, who served as captain of the West Indies and T&T under 15 teams, received good support from Emmanuel Lett (23), Dwayne Cockburn (24) and Kern Matheson (24).

Lester Vaughn in their reply could only get as far as 155 before they were bowled out with Jason Bhola and Lett picking up two wickets each. Based on his outstanding innings Katwaroo was named man of the match. He had the honour of receiving his award from cricket legend Sir Garry Sobers.

An elated Coach Tarrandath Sammy showered praise on the team for their success. “The team really played good cricket and they deserve to be winners. There are a number of youngsters on this team who I believe will go a long way in the game. The future of cricket in T&T certainly looks bright”, Sammy said.

Manager of the team Alec Burns also showered accolades on the members of the team on their success and praised the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board for putting a lot of emphasis on development programmes at the youth level.

“The guys did well and they must be commended for their efforts. It was an excellent team effort. I must commend the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board for placing a lot of emphasis on youth development programmes and it is as a result of these programmes that we are reaping results”, the former national fast bowler stated.

The team will return home on Sunday morning at 9.30 am.
