El Dorado, Fatima cop third straight

EL DORADO East Secondary and Fatima College each copped their third straight victory in the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) Division One yesterday.

In a closely-fought battle away to Naparima College, El Dorado eked out a narrow nine-run win to maintain their 100-percent start to the season.

Taking first strike, El Dorado posted 223 runs for six wickets with Brian Christmas top-scoring with 75 and Ewart Nicholson 51, while Jordan Samkaran took 3/61.

Naparima were unable to deal with the bowling of Travis Karim (3/21) and Namie Suepaul (2/48) was they fell to 214 in 46 overs.

Rajiv Maharaj’s 61, Silas Sookoo’s 52 and Abdul Saleem Ali’s 31 were not enough to merit victory for the hosts.

Fatima used their home support at Mucurapo to their advantage as they blanked Iere High School by seven wickets.

Akil Hosein snapped up 5/26 as Iere were dismissed for 143 in 42.3 overs; Stephen Katwaroo made 29, K Hercules 29 and R Siew 27. Hosein returned with the bat to make 38 while Imran Mustapha top-scored with 41 and John Barclay 31 as Fatima replied with 144/3 in 32.2 overs.

Marc Panchu was the day’s lone centurion as Hillview College demolished hosts Barrackpore West Secondary by 193 runs.

Panchu notched 103 as Hillview were bowled out for 277 in 49 overs, with Christian Bean collecting 3/43 for Barrackpore. But the hosts put in an abysmal batting display, as they were routed for 84.

Presentation College Chaguanas earned their second win in a row, by a seven-wicket margin over Toco Secondary at Chaguanas.

Esan Bhal captured 4/34 and Arshad Khan 2/17 as Toco were restricted to 159/9 in 50 overs, despite 28 from William Thom and 21 from Clayton Wallace.

Deron Davis was unbeaten on 72 and Bhal 33 not out as they guided Presentation to 160/3 in 26.4 overs, with Khan chipping in with 28.

In Division Two, St Mary’s College saw their unbeaten run snapped by Manzanilla High School, as they fell to a six-wicket loss at the CIC Ground, St Clair.

St Mary’s were bowled out for 113 in 44.1 overs with Jesse Bootan notching 34 while Kenson Thompson snared 3/24 and Calvin White 2/9. Johan Lezama was unbeaten on 36 as Manzanilla responded with 114/4 in 30 overs. Dillon Pattia contributed 25 and Steven Sooklal 21 in the run chase.

Shiva Boys Hindu College, however, registered their third straight win as they overcame hosts San Fernando Central Secondary by four wickets.

In a game reduced to 36 overs per side due to the inclement weather, San Fernando were restricted to 143/8 with Shamie Mahase taking 3/22 and Ramesh Bridgelal 2/30. Dinesh Ramdharie made 60 not out and Nicholas Boochon added 21 as Shiva reached 144/6 in 34 overs.

Princes Town Senior Comprehensive whipped the visiting Union Claxton Bay Secondary by 57 runs. Batting first, the hosts were bowled out for 197 with Darius Neeves making 31, Stephon Sandy 27 and Amando Patterson 25. Lucas Chankerdial grabbed 4/58 for Claxon Bay while Scott Ragbir had 2/22 and Kissoondath Magram 2/32.

In reply, Claxton Bay were dismissed for 140 despite 56 from Magram and 51 from Ragbir, with Neeves snapping up 5/36, Brandon Narinesingh 3/20 and Sandy 2/15.

No results were available, up to press time, in one encounter - Swaha Hindu College versus St Augustine Secondary at Sangre Grande.
