Championship and Division 1 Cricket:
Bainey hits first 100 in South

LARRY BAINEY hit the first century of the new season in the General Earth Movers Limited-sponsored Southern Sports Sunday Cricket League on opening day.

Bainey blasted 108 for his team off the Gandhi United attack, while Mitra Ragoonanan of Gandhi recorded the first five-wicket haul, taking five for 48.

And the honour of scoring the first century for Buen Intento Sports fell to Rossi Ramsaroop (120) against Combine XI in Division One action Despite Bainey’s century knock, Reform were bowled out for 252 in their 30 overs, and Gandhi Sports needing 21 to win in the last over saw batsman Sheran Baptiste hitting two sixes, but they fell eight runs short.

Teams in the Champions Division will be playing for over $70,000 in prizemoney with $25,000 going to the winners, while over $30,000 is on offer in the Division series with the winners getting $10,000.

A record 52 teams will be competing in this year’s 30-over matches an increase over last season of 12 teams with 16 in the Champions Division and the other 36 in Division One.

Petrotrin, Penal are the defending Champion Division title while Gandhi Rebels were winners of Division One.

League president Krishna Bedassie has scheduled May 29 for the final in Division One at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre with the finale in the Champions Division set for June 4 also under lights at the same venue.
