TTCB Sunday League 50-overs
Comets upset champs Merry Boys
February 13, 2010

ALESCON COMETS registered a six-wicket upset victory over reigning champs Ceramic Merry Boys at the St Mary’s Ground, Serpentine Road, St James yesterday as the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) Sunday League 50-overs competition began.

Batting first, Merry Boys made 211 all out in their mandatory 50 overs with opener Mario Belcon (56) and Kenton Thompson (34) offering the major resistance to the bowling of Kashcri Singh (2/27) and Magnum Nanan (2/38).

In response, Barbadian Javon Searles— later named as the “Man-of-the-Match”, made an unbeaten 85 and TT captain Daren Ganga 57 as Comets reached 213 for four wickets with six overs left.

PowerGen earned a convincing 55-run victory over last year’s runners-up W Connection Wanderers at Syne Village in Penal.

The hosts made an imposing 260/8 in their allotted overs with Nicholas Sookdeosingh (61), “Man-of-the-Match” Akil Cooper (56 not out), Rondell Ramlochan (45) and Evin Lewis (28) amongst the scorers, while Omesh Ramoutar (3/53) and veteran Rajendra Mangalee (2/47) were the leading wicket-takers.

Captain William Perkins struck 64 but Wanderers, who at one stage were 139/9, were bowled out for 205 in 43.1 overs. Theodore Modeste was unbeaten on 33 while Javed Ramdhanie made 27.

Sherwin Ganga was PowerGen’s best bowler with 3/23 while Varoon Samaroo got 2/26.

Super Industrial Services Central Sports Invaders registered a narrow two-wicket victory over the University of Trinidad and Tobago at Presentation College Ground, Chaguanas, courtesy of a fine all-round display from “Man of the Match” Gary Mathurin.

The St Lucian took 3/31 with his left-arm spin while Adesh Dass claimed 4/22 as UTT were bowled out for 176 in 49.2 overs. Andre D’Andrade made 48 for the UTT, while ex-national opener Imran Jan scored 28.

With the bat, Mathurin notched 71 and Alex Antoine 27 as Invaders responded with 180/8 with 3.4 overs to spare, despite Jahron Alfred’s 2/20 and Marlon Richards 2/27.

CLICO Preysal also eked out a two-wicket win over Rahamut’s Evergreen SC at Pluck Road, Fyzabad.

The hosts were skittled out for 121 in 40.4 overs with West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Yannick Cariah (3/18) and TT ”senior” team pacer Shannon Gabriel (3/25) doing the damage, while Denesh Ramdhanie top-scored for Evergreen with 18.

In response, Preysal reached 122/8 in 33 overs with “Man-of-the-Match” Yannick Ottley notching 54. Guyanese Steven Jacobs (3/19) and John Ross Jaggessar (3/24) could not ensure victory for the home side.

And Queen’s Park registered a convincing 96-run triumph over First Citizens Clarke Road at the Fatima Ground, Mucurapo. The Parkites made 246 all out in 50 overs with evergreen off-spinner Mukesh Persad taking 3/66 and Dominican pacer Mervyn Matthews 2/30.

But Clarke Road were never really in contention, as they were dismissed for 150 in 40 overs despite an undefeated 36 from captain Gregory Mahabir, 27 from Guyanese Homchand Pooran, 24 from Dion Bennett and 21 from Matthews.

Round Two action is scheduled for February 20.
