Under-15s beaten, down but not out
April 4, 2010

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s title hopes took a major blow yesterday after an 81-run defeat at the hands of Jamaica in round four of the West Indies Under-15 Championships at the Wilson Road Recreational Ground in Penal.

Guyana is now the only unbeaten team in the tournament after crushing Barbados yesterday by 10 wickets in a rain affected match at Munroe Road in Cunupia.

The Windward Islands defeated the Leeward Islands in the other match by seven wickets at Kennedy Park, Diamond.

If the national Under-15 team defeats Guyana today at Inshan Ali Park in Preysal and Jamaica beat the Leeward Islands at Gilbert Park all three teams will be level on eight points with net run rate used to decide the tournament champions.

Jamaica sent in to bat first were dismissed for a competitive total of 249 on a wicket which has some moisture. Captain Aldane Thomas led from the front with an aggressive innings of 93 runs with Marquino Mindley chipping in with 43 runs. Jovan Ali, Vikash Mohan and Justin Joseph took three wicket each.

The homesters in their turn at the crease struggled. Opener Jeremy Solozano smashed 50 from 86 balls and middle-order batman Brian Christmas made 30 runs. However, the hosts kept losing wickets and were eventually dismissed for 168 runs with Fabian Allen taking four for 23.

National under-15 manager, Glen Dwarika expressed his disappointment about the loss but is confident the team will rebound against Guyana today.

“We just need to win the final match against Guyana. We will be calculating the net run rate but it is important for the team to beat Guyana,” said Dwarika.

He explained that the batting let the team down in what should have been an easy run chase for the talented Under-15 team.

“We lost wickets at key stages and the boy did not apply themselves,” said Dwarika.
