Ganga, Perkins slam T20 hundreds
April 7, 2010

NATIONAL cricket team captain Daren Ganga smashed a century as Alescon Comets trounced Explorer Sports by 113 runs in their Group “C” Carib Twenty20 encounter at Pierre Road, Charlieville yesterday.

Ganga made 104 off 62 deliveries, with 11 fours and five sixes, while West Indies “A” team selectee Imran Khan blasted a 24-ball 57, with eight fours and three sixes, as Comets tallied 218 runs for three wickets off their allotted 20 overs.

Satish Naidoo contributed 39 not out for Comets while Jimmy Thomas took 2/31 for Explorer.

In reply, Explorer were bowled out for 105 with four balls remaining, with Rakesh Maharaj snapping 3/16 in four overs while Khan, in his four overs, claimed 3/24. Daniel Pierre top-scored with 20 for Explorer.

Ganga’s national team-mate, William Perkins, also made a century as W Connection Wanderers hammered hosts Caldrac by 144 runs in their Group “B” battle.

Perkins made 100 off 34 deliveries, while Omesh Ramoutar (48), Navin Stewart (44) and David Livingston (33) as Wanderers posted 259/8, before they restricted Caldrac to 115/9.

Javed Ramdhanie (2/14) and Zaid Clarke (2/35) were the major bowlers for Wanderers, the 2009 runners-up, while the evergreen Robert Mahabir made 24 and Anthony Ragoo 21.

The other century-maker yesterday was Kjorn Ottley, who ensured that CLICO Preysal inflict a 151-run demolition of Curepe Sports at the Inshan Ali Park, Preysal, in Group “D”.

Ottley slammed 102 off 45 deliveries, with 12 fours and five sixes, as Preysal amassed 232/6. West Indies player Denesh Ramdin chipped in with 49 while Shaun Ramdial got 3/33 for Curepe.

The visitors were never in the hunt, despite 26 from Ewart Nicholson, as they replied with 81/7— Strassark Sankar took 3/14 in four overs.

The UTT earned a narrow 15-run win, in a low-scoring Group “C” affair, over Moosai’s Sports at O’Meara, Arima.

The UTT made 118 in their allotted 20 overs with Keon Isaac and Imran Jan making 33 apiece, while the Guyanese spin pair of Royston Crandon and Mahendra Nagamootoo claimed 4/11 and 2/23 respectively.

Moosai’s Sports were thwarted by the pace of veteran Mervyn Dillon, who took 3/12 in four overs, as they were dismissed for 103 in 19 overs, despite an unbeaten 41 from Nedd Williams. Inclement weather forced a reduction of overs, from 20 to 15, at both the Queen’s Park Oval and the neighbouring St Mary’s Ground in St Clair.

In their Group “F” encounter at the Oval, Queen’s Park I earned a 35-run win over Aranguez Sports.

The Parkites made 125/4 with Runako Morton hitting 44 and Kevon Cooper 25, and then restricted Aranguez to 90/6 with Rishaad Harris getting 2/20.

At the St Mary’s Ground, Ceramic Merry Boys posted 121/5 against Defence Force with Alcindo Holder notching 50 and Mario Belcon 35, while Denzil Halls got 3/24 and Earnil Ryan 2/24.

The Army-Coast Guard combination fell 23 runs, as they reached 98/6, with Cleveland Williams hitting 22, while Alton Beckford grabbed 2/24.

A wet outfield prevented any play between reigning champs Powergen and Rahamut’s Evergreen, in a top-of-the-table Group ‘A’ clash at Pluck Road, while an under-prepared pitch forced a cancellation of the Group “G” Cane Farm-Queen Park II meeting at Crown Street, Tacarigua.

There were no scores available, up to press time, in the Group “A” meeting between Rousillac United against Valiants at Rousillac, the Group ‘D’ clash between Universal Haulers Esmeralda against Canaan/Bon Accord at Esmeralda, the Group “E” fixture between Diamond and Renown Sports Club at Kennedy Park and the Group “F” battle between hosts Barataria and Santa Cruz.

The attention will now turn to the Round of 16 stage, which will feature double-headers, on a daily basis, from Monday until Thursday, at the Queen’s Park Oval.
