Three-way battle for ECU cricket crown – April 9, 2010

DAVE MOHAMMED

SIS Central Sports Invaders will be aiming to dent PowerGen’s charge to retain the Eastern Credit Union Premiership Division crown at Syne Village in Penal today.

PowerGen lead the standings with 151 points and Central Sports are fourth on 132 points. The defending champions have been in tremendous form securing important first innings points from Ceramic Merry Boys and First Citizens Clarke Road.

Central Sports will prove tough opposition and are brimming with confidence after sealing a crushing victory over Rahamut’s Evergreen in the previous round.

Windward Islands allrounder, Gary Mathurin has been the standout player along with left arm spinner Narendra Bridelal for Central Sports. They will be the key players if they are to knock PowerGen off their perch.

Trinidad and Tobago allrounder, Samuel Badree has been the mainstay of the PowerGen lineup. He has lead from the front with his astute captaincy and has been backed up by the experience of Sherwin Ganga and Dave Mohammed.

Queen’s Park can strengthen their position in the league when they host Rahamut’s Evergreen at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. The Parkites are favoured to take full points against Evergreen with a powerful lineup which includes off-spinners Sunil Narine and Amit Jaggernauth as well as batsmen Nicholas Alexis and Darren Bravo. Evergreen are in danger of relegation and a loss would seal their fate. Third place Merry Boys will have a tough match against Clico Preysal at St Mary’s College Ground, Serpentine Road, St James. The Carib Sunday League champions have struggled in their last two matches after being the early pace setters in the tournament.

Allrounder Richard Kelly has fully recovered from his finger injury and will be a major asset. Opening batsman Lendl Simmons has struggled this season and much will be depending on Alcindo Holder and Mario Belcon to score runs.

Preysal will have allrounder Yannic Cariah back in the lineup after missing the club’s Carib Twenty20 match during the week. Cariah attended an interview for the West Indies High Performance Centre and adds dimension to a versatile lineup which includes Nicholas Ramjass as well as Yannick and Kjorn Ottley.

First Citizens Clarke Road will host cellar placed University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) at Wilson Road in Penal.

Clarke Road will be aiming to rebound from their loss to PowerGen in the Penal Derby in the previous round. Allrounder Mahadeo Moonasar has been leading Clarke Road with the ball and ball throughout the season with Deighton Butler. They will be favourites to take maximum points against UTT who have struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premiership Division.

W Connection Wanderers can extend their gap from relegation zone when they play Aleson Comets at Gilbert Park, California. Aggressive batsman William Perkins is coming off a century from the mid week Carib Twenty20 match and will be instrumental if Wanderers are to be victorious.

However, he has not received much assistance with experienced player Navin Stewart struggling. Comets have been thriving recently due to consistent performances by Javon Searles, Kirk Edwards and Imran Khan.

Edwards and Khan have been selected in the West Indies “A” team to play against Zimbabwe and will be confident of continuing their good form.
